Simple. Strong. Saints: The Power of a Team Song
Steve Green | July 17, 2025
There’s something special about a team song. For about 14 seasons at Saints, I had the privilege of leading ours—starting in the 2s before finally earning my spot in 1st grade. When Chadd Porter passed the honour on to me, it wasn’t just about belting out words after a game. It was a badge of honour, a tradition carried forward by passionate Saints before me.
Some might say, "So what? It’s just a song." But for me, it was a celebration of hard work, resilience, and the sheer joy of victory. Just like on the field, I gave it my all—sometimes losing my voice but never the passion. We were lucky enough to win a few premierships during my time at the club, and those moments, singing at the top of our lungs in the sheds, were some of the best of my life.
One memory stands above the rest. We had just won the competition at Bankstown Oval. In the midst of the celebrations, the great Warren Saunders—an icon of our club—walked into the rooms, congratulating the boys on a job well done. I fired up another round of the song, and to everyone’s delight, Wacky joined in. The place erupted. Beer, water—any liquid in a bottle—went flying as we drowned in the pure ecstasy of the moment.
It was a simple song. "Oh When the Saints." Just a few lines. But in those sheds, it meant everything. It was never just about the eleven blokes on the field—it was for the coaches, the supporters, the past players, and everyone who had ever pulled on the Saints’ colors.
You can have your long-winded, drawn-out victory songs, but I’ll take ours any day. It was simple, but effective—just like the way I played the game.
