The Burnside West Christchurch University Premiers head into 2025/26 looking to build on one of the most successful campaigns in club history. Last season, the side claimed two trophies and reached the final in the third competition — a testament to their consistency and depth across formats.

Rather than a complete overhaul, the focus this summer is on fine-tuning and giving opportunities to the next generation. With key players moving on to higher honours or time away, the stage is set for fresh faces to step into bigger roles.

Burnside West Claim Mud Cup Crown in Blenheim

Twelve months on from falling just short, Burnside West Christchurch went one better at Horton Park, lifting the 2025 Mud Cup after an unbeaten campaign capped by a tense 12-run win over hosts Marlborough in Sunday’s final.

The campaign began on tricky footing in a low-scoring arm wrestle with Marlborough. Burnside’s innings looked in danger of collapsing before Tim Seeto, fresh off a winter on the hockey turf, steadied and counter-punched his way to an unbeaten 40.

Seeto, Winter, Zohrab Lead Burnside West's Mud Cup Charge

Horton Park in Blenheim will again play host to Burnside West Christchurch University CC, Saint Albans, Sydenham and Marlborough’s Hawke Cup side. It’s a competition that prepares sides for the season ahead and offers locals a fantastic spectacle.

For Burnside West, the trip north is no casual exercise. Coach Carl Huyser has named a 16-man squad brimming with intent, the club chasing both sharpness and silverware after finishing runners-up in last year’s edition. There’s a desire to start on the front foot – in the hope that momentum in September can translate into history in March, where BWCUCC will look to become the first club in history to win four Two-Day Premierships in a row.

The Burnside West Christchurch University Championship side heads into the 2025/26 season with plenty of confidence after a remarkable 2024/25 campaign.

Last summer was one to remember. The team lifted both the 2-Day Championship and the T20 trophy, while also reaching the semi-finals of the 50-over competition. The two-day title was all but wrapped up before Christmas, though a post–white ball break slump meant a nervous wait on the final afternoon. In contrast, the T20 final was a dominant performance — a 92-run victory on Hagley Oval.

The Foxes are preparing to bounce back in 2025/26 after a testing campaign last year. Injuries struck hard, with as many as five core players sidelined for much of the season, leaving the squad short-handed and forcing casual players into permanent roles.

Despite the setbacks, the squad grew in depth, and the side is now set to reap the rewards with a return to full strength this season. With over 1,700 games of experience across the squad, plus players pushing for over-age representative honours, the Foxes have no shortage of skill, knowledge, and motivation.

RIP Ian Fisher

I first noticed it when my all-powerful St George team was winning a hat-trick of Sydney 1st Grade Premierships. We’d unearthed a young spinner who before he was aged 20 had taken more wickets in Sydney grade than anyone of that age had ever done before. Kerry O’Keeffe. The same Kerry O’Keeffe used to say he had nightmares about bowling to Ian Fisher. He’d have a couple of wickets up his sleeve and in would come Fish. A few balls later there’d be a little skip down the pitch, the beautiful sound of the middle of a cricket bat hitting a cricket ball, and very soon afterwards the sound of a cricket ball crashing into a picket fence wide of wide of long-on. In mid-pitch, the head of I Fisher would swing around, eyes a-gleam, chin out, eyeballing everyone, as if to say: "bring it on!"

Bob Simpson 1936-2025

One of Australia’s finest opening batsmen and most brilliant slip fielders, Bob Simpson, passed away on Saturday 16 August 2025. He was 89.

Bob was a product of the Marrickville District Cricket Club. Bobby first played in Marrickville’s A W Green Shield under 16 years team as a 13 year old in 1949-50. Two years later in the 3rd Grade team of the newly created Petersham-Marrickville DCC Bobby impressed selectors with the 219 runs he scored after just a few matches and promoted him directly into the 1st XI shortly after his 16th birthday.
