The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.
Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.
Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.
Most memorable moment in cricket: 1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.

Q: Waratahs CC of Armidale - now The Tahs - has a proud history … a proud, extremely well documented history. Its statistical record would be the envy of many a cricket club playing at the highest levels in Australia’s largest cities, let alone a club from a rural town in the New England region of NSW.
Waratahs played cricket in Armidale from 1950 through to 2006, usually with at least two grades, often three and during the 1980’s five. in Waratahs peak season of 1988-89, 96 players turned out. ...

Q: Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale - now The Tahs Inc - has an interesting and very accessible history.
With one of the most extensive set of club records of any Australian sporting club, our history is revered and often looked over. It always informed each new group of custodians and linked players over the ages, revering with great equity each member of the Waratahs family.
One of the reasons this ethos was developed and maintained were its leaders, on and off the field. Another was the creation of the Yearbook, issued annually at the Presentation Dinner since 1972. After the speeches were finished and the trophies handed out, a quiet would always descend over the room as everyone first checked their stats, then read the reports and finally thumbed through the records section to see what performances had joined the pantheon of the greats.

Q: In 1976, GRAHAM FROST (#333) made 26 on debut for B grade v Centrals in a one day game. In what was the first game in an 18 year career for Waratahs, which although spanning every grade, was dominated by his outstanding performances in A/1st grade.
Originally a middle order player, he soon became a regular opener in the top grade, his batting marked by his elegance and grace. Frosty is the 5th highest run scorer overall for Waratahs (4,781 runs) and also the 5th highest in 1sts (2,974). He made 5 hundreds for the club and famously 6 scores in the 90's. He batted in 10 century partnership (two each with the Rogers - Sattler and Roan), including the highest partnership ever recorded for Waratahs, 293 unbeaten with Tim Muldoon (#296). He is one of only three batsmen to score more than 150 twice. He six times won end of season batting trophies.
Frosty had safe hands in the outfield but was a very reluctant wicketkeeper, only taking the gloves when there was no one else. Despite that, he twice held 5 catches in an innings behind the stumps. His 131 catches for the club trail only Albert Hofkamp (#476), Alan Gray (#26) and Terry Betts (#205).
The organiser of the reunion dinner which led to the formation of The Tahs Inc in 2023, he has always been a clubman first. Its no surprise that when more than seventy ex Waratahs players voted in 2010 for the best Waratahs side ever, he was included.

Q: The Tahs (formerly Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale) are thrilled to report on the progress being made by the first recipient of our Ian Campbell Scholarship.
Brooke Moran, a 14 year allrounder from Armidale, this week had the first of her dreams come true, training with Manly Warringah District Cricket Club's women's team and then having a one on one session with Hannah Darlington. As a result, Brooke has accepted an offer to be part of the Manly Waratahs pathways program.
The Tahs are a non playing club which was formed among the remnants of Waratahs, long after the club ceased to exist as a playing entity. It aims to promote well being and support for its members and to encourage junior development through its Ian Campbell Scholarship.
Manly Warringah Waratahs have generously offered their support of the scholarship by providing an opportunity for a young country cricketer to be exposed to a higher level of cricket experience and advice from the players they look up to.

A program to support the skills and understanding of the game, the funds for the scholarships have been raised entirely from donations among its 60 plus membership.
No longer a playing club, The Tahs was reformed two years ago as a social club with the twin aims of supporting connections between past players, families and foes on the field and friends off AND raising funds to support young cricketers in Armidale.
The awards have been possible thanks to a high level of collaboration with the Armidale District Cricket Association and the support of Paul Ryan.

Q: 11th April, 1953. Waratahs A-grade won the club's first Premiership in an epic game against Easts at the Armidale Sportsground, played in two distinct halves and with changes in fortunes almost too unbelievable to accept as truth. Yet here is the tale, as reported in the Armidale Express and told to Peter Langston by Milton Milligan, who played in the game. Don Paul's 13-44 on the second day, is one of the most remarkable bowling performance ever seen in an Armidale Final and Waratahs win against the odds, probably the club's greatest achievement.
April 11th 1953, a definitive moment in Waratahs history, when the first premiership was won. Against all odds, including form, weather, experience, A grade beat the second of two ...
Q: The 9th of April will always be known in Waratahs history as the day of the bunnies. In 1960, Waratahs won their first B grade title on the strength of the batting of probably the worst 9, 10, Jack every to wear the Royal Baggy Blue.
Q: On this day in 1976, A grade were runners up again, this time to St Peters, who won their first ever A grade Premiership. Brian Joice (6-76) and Terry Mackenzie bowled a heroic 49 overs between them but could not stop a David Mitchell century which had its share of luck and a Keith Smith masterclass. I reply, Duster Bower destroyed the top order and Mark McCann spun out most of the rest, as Waratahs were never in the hunt.
A -Res won their Premiership in a 10 wicket demolishing of Churches.
Q: Two Waratahs Premierships occurred on the 1st of April.
In 1990, Waratahs won its final 1st grade Premiership, when rain washed out their game against Ex Services. The dominant side all season, it was a fitting result.
In 2001, 3rd grade were minor and major premiers when Michael Truswell made his third century for the season in the Final victory against Easts.
Q: Waratahs most successful day in ADCA cricket, with five Premierships and and two Runners-Up, but when you are runners-up to your own club, does it really count as a loss? Seven Finals and two semis on the is day - 29th March - in Waratahs history.
Q: Two up, two down in Waratahs Finals played on this day 28th March. Tim Bindley (pictured) won the Beau Richardson Trophy for his role in the 4th grade Final of 1982.
Q: A semi that could have been won as A grade squandered good match positions repeatedly on this day in 1960 v Uralla. Brian Roberts took 5-75 and Hugh Ferris (pictured) opened and top scored.
Q: Two remarkable Premiership victories on this day.
In 1972, A grade won comprehensively against Unicorns and put to bed the bogey which had seen them lose four out of the previous five Finals and a wait of 19 years since their previous Premiership. For once, the batting fired and then one of Waratahs strongest ever bowling attacks - Tom Cooke, Terry Mackenzie, Brian Joyce and John Donnelly - easily accounted for the University men.
In 1995, 4th grade rolled Norths reasonably cheaply after the same side had blitzed them in the semi. Joe Cairns took a career best 7-48. Waratahs were in trouble in reply until wicketkeeper Scott Murphy came out and thrashed the bowling, making the best century made in any Waratahs Final.

Q: Two bold Premiership victories in 1974 and 1984.
In 1974, A-Res grade won on the back of a MOM performance by the veteran John Russell, who bamboozled a Hillgrove with future stars Peter Schaefer and Gavin Morgan in their ranks. Russell had match figures of 10-69, including a match defining 6-33 in Hillgrove's first innings. In 1984 Waratahs beat Easts in an epic 1st grade Final, despite losing skipper and opening bowler Wes Davis on the eve of the game. After a strong opening stand, Tony Marquardt cut Waratahs down. In reply, Steve Reading, making only his second appearance in 1sts for the season, quickly removed the top three and then Joe Harrison spun a web around the rest for a remarkable win. Centrals outgunned 2nds in their Final.
The top three grades played Semis in 1990. 1sts bowled brilliantly but only just fell over the line against Hillgrove, but both lower grades surrendered against Easts. Jeremy Roach (6-41 - pictured) kept 2nds in the game until the batsmen threw it away and 3rds were demolished by Williams of Easts.
Q: Some heroic deeds were performed on this day - 23rd March - for Waratahs, despite all of the games being losses. Two Finals were lost when 1st grade (1974 & 1991) were raging hot favourites. In 1996, 2nds and 5ths lost their Preliminary Finals, after battling into and through the semis. 1985 produced two epic matches in the top two grades. Ist grade were facing a hiding after four Easts players made half centuries in getting 6-301. The openers made a good start, adding 70, but four wickets fell for 28 before Roger Sattler stood tall and led a sterling fight back that eventually fell 26 runs short. It was a carbon copy in 2nds, Uralla making 286 on the Saturday and Waratahs collapsing to 5-71 before Merv Philp, Peter Langston and Graham Patterson batted them back into the game. In the end, an illegal catch and a bowler with a damaged back ended their valour just 7 runs short.
Q: Waratahs played in four Finals on the 23rd March, with unfortunately, only one positive result: 2nd grade of 1985-86, when MATT CAMPBELL (#363) made a steady, match winning unbeaten half century batting at five. In 1st grade, Waratahs were the red hot favourites with a star-studded side but were out muscled in a bitter and angry Final by Centrals. Eleven years earlier, the top two grades lost to Ex Services and Hillgrove respectively. Brian Connolly's 80 was the highest score every made in a top grade Final but Ex Services won after being 6 down and a hundred behind. A-Res had been undefeated coming into the decider against Hillgrove but collapsed when chasing a moderate Hillgrove total.
In other finals games on this date, B grade won their semi outright against Tadcoop in 1963, GEOFF MARSHALL (#156) and GEOFF MacDONALD (#168) both staring with bat and ball. In 1968, A grade gave Churches a 157 run hiding thanks to TOM COOKE's (#197) 6-64 and JOHN ROBERTS's (#115) 73 not out. In Preliminary Finals of 1996, 2nd grade lost to Uralla and 5ths lost to Norths, despite STEVE DAVIS (#751) taking 7-36.

Q: There were some stunning performances over 40 years by Waratahs in Semi and Preliminary Finals on the 22nd March. In 1959, Nigel Richardson (5-43) bowled the Minor Premiers Hillgrove out for 99 before his batsmen failed. In 1981, Waratahs had four sides in the semis: 1st scraped home against Hillgrove thanks to Michael Connolly carrying his bat; both sides in A-Res grade won through to an all Waratahs Final; and B grade lost despite John Williamson's bowling (6-34). In 1987, Brian Rhodes made a classic hundred for 1sts to win and 5th almost won outright. In 1992, Danny Ryan's bowling (6-16) wasn't enough for 1sts to beat Easts but in 1998, Gavin Finlayson in 3rds and Lindsay McIntyre in 4ths dominated Waratahs victories.
Q: Finals action from as far back as Waratahs earliest years, with Ross Ridley’s great run of late season form continuing with a win over Minor Premiers Easts I. In 1982 it was all four sides in the semis, with mire Jack. Trestrail and Brian Joice getting the 3rds home.
Q: ADCA Semi-Finals and Preliminary Finals from five different seasons, nearly thirty years apart happened on this day for Waratahs.
In 1966, A grade missed out the final when rained robbed them and University of a positive result after Waratahs dominated the first day. A-Res grade snuck home by a wicket. In 1971, fortune was reversed, with A grade hanging on for a draw against St Peters and A-Res grade being done. In 1983, rain stopped 1sts from chasing 400 against Easts and a draw kept them from the Final, while 2nds were done despite a glorious first day hundred from Graham Johnson. In 1988, 1sts were Minor Premiers but lost in a shock to Hillgrove with a batting lineup which could afford Graham Frost at #8 and 3rds lost by 21 chasing 236 after being 3-0. In 1994, 4th grade, losing the Minor Premiership on percentages, were bundled out in straight losses in the final series.
In 1995, 4th & 5th grade were playing for spots in the Final. After a hammering in the major semi v Norths, 4ths won a close first innings tussle chasing v Uralla but were w ...
Q: Despite being all over Minor Premiers Hillgrove in 1961, A-Res grade could only manage a draw. B grade also bowed out after being well beaten by Public Service. It was different story in 1984, 1sts winning a tight contest with Hillgrove and 2nd grade taking up Easts challenge and winning outright after a comfortable first innings lead thanks to Jack Trestrail and Victor Crew.
Q: 1st grade continued on their winning ways in season 1990-91, with a hard fought win v Ex Services in the semi-final. 4th unfortunately lost. In 1996, 2nd grade beat Hillgrove in their semi with skipper Andrew Willis making 103 and Matt Griffiths taking a career best 7-57. 5th grade also won, with Steven Davis capturing 8-60 v Uralla.
In 1991, two semi-finals were completed. In 1sts, Waratahs just prevailed over Ex Services in a tough battle. On the first day, former 'Tah, Greg Johnson, held Servies together wit ...
Q: Some brilliant semi-final cricket from Waratahs on this day, 16th March during the 1980's. Heart break in 1980, losing all three semis but in 1986, Graham Johnson's (#207) brilliant 127 of 2nd grade's 191, Andrew McNeill's (#419) best bowling figures of 6-32 and Daniel Ryan's first Waratahs hundred as a stripling, 108 in a gallant losing cause in 5th grade.
Q: Five Waratahs semi finals played on this day, 15th March, from 1958 to 1998 ... with mixed results and some glorious performances. Perhaps none were better than Steve Hadfield's half century and 6 catches behind the stumps for 1st grade and Chris Duncan's brilliant century for the all conquering 3rds, both in 1992.

Q: In 1966-67, Waratahs A grade had been strengthened by the addition of new players to town, Graham Johnson and Terry Betts and the eventual elevation to A grade of their star youngster Greg Russell. They had a mixed season, winning six of their nines games, including an outright against Public Service when they declared 69 behind and thanks to Bill Thompson, chased down the 142 needed to win in little over an hour. They squeaked through the semi final against University when #11 John Roberts stayed with a belligerent Thompson. Their batting had been brittle, with Thompson, Johnson and Alan Gray taking the load. It was their bowling which had kept them in the hunt, with Tom Cooke and Brian Roberts a potent new ball attack, backed by Peter Rigg and Terry Mackenzie, whose appearances were limited.
In 1967, Waratahs were competition runners up in the top two grades, A grade losing to Ex Services and A-Res grade to University. In 1972, BRIAN CONNOLLY (#2 ...

Q: In 1962, LAURIE BLAKE (#126) did the hat trick for A-Res grade v Hillgrove, in the course of capturing the remarkable figures of 6-2. In order to try and engineer the outright they need to qualify for the semis, Waratahs declared behind on the first innings, to no eventual avail.

In the process, he shared partnerships of 126 with DANNY BROWN (#404) for the 3rd wicket and 107 with ROGER HAY (#427) for the 4th. To cap the afternoon off, he was the first man out in a Steve Ross hat trick!
Waratahs v St Peters - 3rd grade, 3rd & 10th March 1984
In 1990, it was all action, with highlights from all five grades. In 1st grade, PHIL MELVILLE (#542) took 9-14 v Uralla, the best bowling figures in that grade.
Waratahs v Uralla - 1st grade, 10th & 17th March 1990
In 2nd grade, PETER EVANS (#532) scored his only Waratahs hundred, with 106 not out v Centrals. He shared a partnership of 113 with STEVE HADFIELD (#524) for the 3rd wicket, after Hadfield had added 117 for the 2nd wicket with BOB BARWICK (#234). Hadfield's 92 was his highest Waratahs score.
Waratahs v Centrals - 2nd grade, 10th & 17th March 1990

In 5ths, SUNIL REDDY (#622) and ANDREW HUGHES (#593) made a grade record partnership of 96 for the 8th wicket v Hillgrove. Hughes 47 was his highest score for Waratahs.
Waratahs v Hillgrove - 5th grade, 10th & 17th March 1990
In 2001, (a newly recovered record), MICHAEL TRUSWELL (#800) made 101 for 3rd grade v TAS.
Q: Members of the Tahs and family members gathered at The Gabba for the first day of the 3rd Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between Australia and India. Quite a few Brisbane locals were joined by members who had travelled from Armidale, the NSW Mid-North Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Hong Kong.
Unfortunately, only 13.2 overs of play were allowed before heavy rain fell for most of the day, before a wash-out and stumps were called at 4.18pm local time.
Despite the disappointing weather, those in attendance enjoyed the day – catching up with each other and hearing news of life’s journeys since last they were together.

Q: Tahs members from Armidale, the original home of Waratahs Cricket Club from 1950-2006, met for lunch and fair splattering of what they could remember of how good they were.
Pictured from left are Mike Porter, former Easts stalwart and the main reason cricket still has breath in the Northern Tablelands town; Tahs Secretary Peter Langston from Tamworth, just a hundred clicks south on the New England Highway; Graham Frost, champion from Waratahs sides of the late 70’s and early 80’s; and the newest member of the Tahs, Garry Holloway, who has become the new club’s low marker, as the holder of the lowest membership number of the old Waratahs having first played nearly sixty years ago in his early teens.

Q: From Father Andrew Davis (#354) this lovely story which is so representative of Waratahs.
“A photo from today's Anzac Day ceremonies in Armidale. Dad (Rod Davis - pictured right) with Ron Woods (#610 - pictured left), former Armidale police chief and father of Andrew (#607).
While not a playing member, Dad fielded once or twice for WCC when we found ourselves short, including (infamously) in a 1st grade game at Lambert when we were unexpectedly down a man. Following our ask for assistance and having gone home to get his old creams and boots, his on-field exploits included dropping a shin-high catch at shortish square leg.
He was pretty grumpy for the rest of the day, including when at the pub, having being urged to have a beer with the boys after the day's play - not aided by Tim Muldoon (#296) ribbing him continually knowing he was grumpy. Dozer of course had known Dad for many years since Tim and I had gone to school together and, suffice to say, Dad knew Tim's humour.
When I travelled down to last year's reunion, I did ask Dad if he remembered filling in - response, "I should have taken that bloody catch". 🙂”
We just love to hear and post these stories. Please, if you have a Waratahs yarn, send it to thetahs@gmail.com

Q: Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale played in the Armidale District CA (formerly the New England CA) from the 1950-51 season until their last game in 2005-06. They had a couple of amalgamations post 2001 - first with Norths and for one season with Centrals - before exiting after one last season under their own, defiant banner at the end of 2005-06.
A club to be proud of, it was at its strongest in the 1980's, not only winning more premierships with its depth of ever rejuvenating talent but having more members and more teams which spread into the junior ranks and the early days of women's cricket.
Keeping the records of Waratahs has always been important. Our Yearbooks are the stuff of Armidale cricket legend - a seasonal review of the club's activity, on and off the field.
