ON THIS DAY - 16th September
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | September 22, 2024
* in 1950, Waratahs played its first game as Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale, when it played against High School (i.e. Armidale HS) in A-Reserve grade on Racecourse 1. They wouldn't last there long, being promoted to A grade before Christmas and staying there until it became 1st grade in 1981. It would remain in 1st grade until 1994. The team for that first game - The Originals - were: S Blake (#1), Laurie Cooper (#2), John Carr (#11), J Hocking (#3), Joe Leahy (#4), Vic Snell (#9), D Nott (#5), Ross Ridley (#8), Beau Richardson (#6), John Ridley (#7), N Logan (#11a) and A Kerwin (#12a). Can anyone help us with the first names?
* in 1972, Cliff Schaffer (#246) and Ian Campbell (#212) added a grade record 216 for the second wicket as A-Res made 2-218 v Uralla. Campbelli made 131, his only club hundred and Hunter remained 85 not out. Not bad for the opening day of the season! It was the highest of seven century stands that Life Member Ian was involved in.
