Yusof Brown – A Bona Fide Loyal Clubman

Yusof Brown is somewhat of an ‘unsung hero’, a bona fide loyal clubman who captained the Parramatta 4th grade team, that contained some of the club’s most promising youngsters, to the NSW Premier Cricket’s 4th grade Grand Final in successive seasons 2021/22 and 2022/23), and to the Semi-Final in 2024/25. His calm and encouraging leadership have greatly aided the grade cricket education of his young charges and the Parramatta club will reap future benefits from Yusof’s efforts.

Len Leabeater was a true Parramatta product – born on 10th July 1906 at Parramatta, educated at Parramatta High School, he died on 1st June 1996 at Port Macquarie. He gave away cricket at the early age of 29 years to focus on his Accountancy career.

A brilliant schoolboy cricketer and soccer player (NSW rep.), he later became a regular 1st grade Soccer player with the famous Granville Magpies team. He commenced playing for Central Cumberland in 3rd grade in 1921/22 and showed great promise as 16-year-old opening batsman. Len made his 1st grade debut in 1922/23 and played a handful of games in that grade in the 1925/26 season with moderate success, finally he cemented a permanent place in 1926/27 and continued to produce a range of great exploits until his premature retirement in 1934/35. Greg Davidson was one of the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s memorial characters – a mountain of a man standing 6ft 10inches in the old imperial measurements, armed with an amiable manner and a laconic sense of humour all topped off with a wonderful baritone’s speaking voice. It was also ironic that such a large man should trundle down gentle off-spinners and bat in a conservative fashion instead of hurling down thunderbolts from a great height and smiting massive sixes. Answering to the nicknames of ‘Davo’ or ‘Longy’, the former Greystanes Cricket Club junior and Merrylands Oval grounds man left behind a legacy of a very rewarding career and plenty of great tales when he retired from playing in 2007/08 to try his hand at Umpiring.

Keeping it in the Family - Penrith Cricket Club

The photo above is a photo of the Penrith Fourths in 1978/79. It reflects a family influence(*) that would impact on the Club in the decades ahead. Fathers and sons, and, even grandsons are likely to perpetuate a typical spirit. Lose it, and the danger is you can lose that certain something that keeps a Club buzzing. Players (back row, l to r) are: N Greenway, Ian Wyatt, John Klincke*, Jon Llewelyn; (front row) Rod Vernon, Pat Doyle*, Trevor Wholohan*, Tony Diaczok, Paul Thomas*, David Blake*. John Klincke is the father of Jacqueline-Marie, who was a member of the Penrith Women’s Brewer Shield winning team in 2011/12;

Jason Coleman can best be described as a dyed-in-the-wool ‘cricket tragic’, the complete devotee of the game. Originally a Kings Langley junior player he has dedicated his entire adult life to partaking in cricket related escapades. His ongoing romance with cricket has, over the past three decades, seen him playing non-stop Grade and Shires cricket in Sydney (plus Coaching) during the Australian summer, and then jetting-off to England to play, coach and work in cricket administration in the U.K. league and minor counties competitions over the English summer.

Tim McMahon was a product of the highly regarded Kings Langley junior club. The tall right-hander was a batsman with talent to burn. A knock-about-bloke who enjoyed a bet, a beer and either a cricket bat or racing form guide in his hand. Many observers felt that with a more disciplined focus, he would have ascended to first-class cricket – he did in fact play for the NSW 2nd eleven.

Either opening or in the middle-order he had the ability to tear bowling attacks apart, through the sheer power and aggression of his entertaining stroke play. A batsman with the ability to warrant a place in the Parramatta (Cumberland) teams of any era.
