Q: 200 and counting for local junior Matt Hay
Stringing together hundreds of games of top-level grassroots sport is becoming increasingly rarer than it once was.
On Saturday, November 1, BWCUCC captain Matt Hay joins a fairly elite collection of players to play 200 premier games for the club. He becomes the second local junior to achieve the feat, following in the footsteps of club legend Mark Hastings.

Q: Ben Wright has arrived at BWCUCC from Bradford Premier League Club Farsley in the North of England, where he is the captain. Wright is a top order batsman who offers handy overs of medium pace. It is his first trip to New Zealand to play and he has already made an impression on the club.
We asked Ben how his experience in Christchurch has been so far.

Matt sports a swimmer's build, bowls like the wind and hits it miles. These three facets have played a part in the 21-year-old's inclusion in the Canterbury 'A' setup, where the Christ's College old boy is chasing higher honours.
We sat down with Matt and asked how he was settling in to life on Avonhead Road.

Q: BWCUCC History Series: Amalgamation and War Years
In the early decades of the 20th century, world events shaped Christchurch cricket as much as local rivalries. The two World Wars and the Great Depression took a heavy toll on clubs at Hagley Park, but they also forged a determination to endure.
Club historians note that in the 1900s, merging teams in the wake of “depressions and World Wars” was considered “paramount to maintaining the standard of local cricket”. In practice, this meant smaller clubs had to combine resources if they wanted to field full teams and keep competition alive at Hagley.

Q: The Burnside West Christchurch University Premiers head into 2025/26 looking to build on one of the most successful campaigns in club history. Last season, the side claimed two trophies and reached the final in the third competition — a testament to their consistency and depth across formats.
Rather than a complete overhaul, the focus this summer is on fine-tuning and giving opportunities to the next generation. With key players moving on to higher honours or time away, the stage is set for fresh faces to step into bigger roles.

question
Q: Burnside West Claim Mud Cup Crown in Blenheim
Twelve months on from falling just short, Burnside West Christchurch went one better at Horton Park, lifting the 2025 Mud Cup after an unbeaten campaign capped by a tense 12-run win over hosts Marlborough in Sunday’s final.
The campaign began on tricky footing in a low-scoring arm wrestle with Marlborough. Burnside’s innings looked in danger of collapsing before Tim Seeto, fresh off a winter on the hockey turf, steadied and counter-punched his way to an unbeaten 40.

Q: Seeto, Winter, Zohrab Lead Burnside West's Mud Cup Charge
Horton Park in Blenheim will again play host to Burnside West Christchurch University CC, Saint Albans, Sydenham and Marlborough’s Hawke Cup side. It’s a competition that prepares sides for the season ahead and offers locals a fantastic spectacle.
For Burnside West, the trip north is no casual exercise. Coach Carl Huyser has named a 16-man squad brimming with intent, the club chasing both sharpness and silverware after finishing runners-up in last year’s edition. There’s a desire to start on the front foot – in the hope that momentum in September can translate into history in March, where BWCUCC will look to become the first club in history to win four Two-Day Premierships in a row.

Q: The Burnside West Christchurch University Championship side heads into the 2025/26 season with plenty of confidence after a remarkable 2024/25 campaign.
Last summer was one to remember. The team lifted both the 2-Day Championship and the T20 trophy, while also reaching the semi-finals of the 50-over competition. The two-day title was all but wrapped up before Christmas, though a post–white ball break slump meant a nervous wait on the final afternoon. In contrast, the T20 final was a dominant performance — a 92-run victory on Hagley Oval.

Q: The Foxes are preparing to bounce back in 2025/26 after a testing campaign last year. Injuries struck hard, with as many as five core players sidelined for much of the season, leaving the squad short-handed and forcing casual players into permanent roles.
Despite the setbacks, the squad grew in depth, and the side is now set to reap the rewards with a return to full strength this season. With over 1,700 games of experience across the squad, plus players pushing for over-age representative honours, the Foxes have no shortage of skill, knowledge, and motivation.

                    question
Q: Mitchell Hay has established himself as an ever-reliable option behind the stumps at international level.
His form for Canterbury and the Black Caps over the past 18 months saw him be rewarded with one of New Zealand Cricket's central contracts for the 2025/26 season, which will increase Hay's resources to develop his craft all year round.
The 24-year-old thought he'd be a chance, but admits the phone call from then-Black Caps' coach, Gary Stead, was very exciting.
"I got a call while I was in Bangladesh for the New Zealand ‘A’ tour from Gary Stead. So that was cool," Hay says.

Q: National Selection: Izzy Sharp's White Ferns call up
North West Women’s Cricket Club was incredibly proud late last summer with the announcement that Izzy Sharp would be called into the White Ferns squad for the T20 series against Sri Lanka, with two of the matches played at Hagley Oval.
20 year old Sharp was called into the One Day squad as Lauren Downs was ruled out with a back injury – those fixtures were played on Friday 7th of March and Sunday 9th of March in Nelson.
