The Preview: Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Division Two Lions

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club | August 29, 2025

Lions Eye Back-to-Back Glory

The new cricket season is fast approaching, and Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club’s Division 2 Lions are shaping up as a side to watch. After breaking through for their maiden One Day title in a thrilling finish at Burnside Park last summer, the Lions are hungry for more success.

We caught up with skipper James Guild Inder to talk about the belief built last season, the team’s strengths, and the players to keep an eye on in 2025/26.

Last season was a successful one for the Lions, capped by your first One Day title. What are you most looking forward to this summer?

As skipper, the thing I’m most looking forward to is seeing the continued growth of our younger players. We’ve got a great core of experienced guys I know I can trust to deliver, but it’s always the most exciting when one of the young fellas has a day out with bat or ball.

What lessons did the team take from last season that will help you this year?

The belief we found is going to be a huge advantage. Winning the One Day Cup showed us what we’re capable of. The boys are eager to go back-to-back in that competition and hopefully add even more silverware.

Where do you see the team’s biggest strength heading into the season?

It’s hard to look past our bowling attack. They’re always stepping up and winning games for us. But it’s tough to pinpoint one area—we’ve bowled sides out for under 100 and we’ve chased totals over 200 with wickets in hand. That balance across the team is what makes us strong.

Are there any players supporters should keep an eye on?

One player to watch is our new tall opening bowler, Taj Chapman-Peters. He’s quick, swings the ball, and in the few games he played last season he showed he can take out the top order. He’ll surprise a few people this year.

As captain, what goals have you set for the Lions this season?

We’ve set ourselves a few goals. Firstly, we want to play the game in a way we can be proud of, regardless of results. Of course, we want to win, but doing it in a fun, competitive spirit is important. Secondly, we’re targeting all three competitions this year. And if we can tick those off, promotion to Division 1 would be the cherry on top.

With belief restored, a balanced squad, and young talent ready to make their mark, the Lions enter 2025/26 as genuine contenders. If last season was about breaking through, this summer could be about building a dynasty.
