ON THIS DAY - 29th November

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | November 30, 2025

In 1952, K Godley (#35) bagged a pair in a fairly forgettable performance by A grade in which they lost outright against University. On the first day, University's Roy Smith took five wickets as Waratahs struggled to break a hundred and Unibversity batted their way to decent lead. On the second day, with skipper Skillicorn back, Alan Gray (#26) held the side together with help from some of the others but seven players failed to make double figures as Smith again proved to be too much. University strolled to a seven wicket victory on the back of a hundred run partership by Tony Horadam and S Dasey, both Waratahs players the previous season!

In 1980, ROGER SATTLER (#378) was wearing spectacles by the end of the day, after a pair for A grade v Easts. In a first innings where Michael Connolly (#293) was the only batsman to make a go of it, Wally holed out to Nobby Baillie. Waratahs required only two bowlers to perforate and sink their star-studded batting line up for their lowest ever total against Waratahs - Rene Mullen (#321) and Wesley Winston Davis (#386) taking five each. In a rain shortened game, Conno was again the mainstay as Wal was bowled by Neil Johnson for the second globe to complete a rare match for the ace allrounder ... no catches, didn't get a bowl and no runs.

In 1986, GRAHAM PATTERSON (#346) had one of his best days for Waratahs. Playing for 3rds against Easts, Patto ripped through Easts taking 6-37 in a one day game, with four catches in the outfield to bucket hands ALBERT HOFKAMP (#476). Patto then top scored in chasing Easts down in a 4 wicket victory.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
