ON THIS DAY - 2nd November

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | November 02, 2025

In 1968, GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207), better known for his batting, took a career best 7-70 for A grade v Uralla. Rolling Uralla on the first day, Waratahs took a 36 run lead on the second, thanks to Bill Thompson (#185) and Terry Betts #205), before trying unsuccessfully, to secure the outright.

1991, STEVE HADFIELD (#524) and JAMES CAMPBELL (#382) combined for an opening partnership of 114 for 1st grade v St Peter’s, both making half centuries as Waratahs won comfortably.

BEDE RYAN (#503) made 102 not out and IAN MUNDAY (#595) 106 for 3rd grade v Wollomombi. Waratahs won the match but no score card is available, which is a pity because you would image there was a century partnership between the two.

PETER LANGSTON (#357) and youngster DANNY KINGELTY (#640) added an all grades record 180 unbeaten for the 4th wicket as 4th grade recovered on the second at to avoid an outright defeat at the hands of Ex Services. All out for just 76 on the first day, Waratahs surrendered a 120 run deficit on the first innings and at 4-102 in their second innings were in danger of a big defeat. Lango made his third Waratahs hundred and Kingelty made his highest score for the club.

5th grade were dismissed for 67, equal to lowest team total Waratahs made in that grade. After Centrals made 308 on the first afternoon despite a Richard Ford hat trick, all the Waratahs boys got two innings on the second day for one of 5th grade’s biggest defeats.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
