ON THIS DAY - 14th November

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | November 14, 2025

In 1953, in a tale of two partnerships, Waratahs A grade chased down Uralla's 197 with two century parnerships on two separate days. On the first afternoon, in a partnership dominated by ROSS RIDLEY (#8), he and FRED SKILLICORN (#31 - pictured, front row, 3rd from the left) put on 102 for the 5th wicket, lifting the side from 4-31. Ridley was out in the first over of the second day and Skillicorn in the second, leaving the side tottering again and still more than 60 behind. DON PAUL (#37) and BOB HOWE (#36) added a neat 100 for the 7th wicket and in the process, steered Waratahs to a handy lead. After early Uralla wickets fell, Skillicorn and Paul then kept Uralla's lead in check and Waratahs smashed their way to an outright win in just nine overs.

In 1981, TIM BINDLEY (#393) held 4 catches as 4th grade routed Uralla for just 87. It then took Waratahs 66 overs to get in front!

In 1987, PETER MURPHY (#535) backed up a great first day with a pretty handy second, finishing with match figures of 31-8-44-11 as 2nd grade crushed St Peters by an innings.

In 3rd grade, MARTIN CAMPBELL (#490) held 4 catches across two Uni Vets innings as Waratahs, despite playing one short, came within two wickets of grabbing an outright. Campbell made 88 in Uni Vets first innings.

In 1992, TIM QUINLAN (#659) and NORMAN SCHWARZ (#569) set an all grades record partnership for the 8th wicket, adding 112 unbeaten and turning a good score by 2nds against Ex Services, into a great one. Batting into the second day, Waratahs made 7-388. Earlier in the innings, MARK TANNER (#573) made his highest score for Waratahs, 93 at his trademark rapid pace. Ex Services were in early trouble but kept on swinging, despite going down by 119.

In 5th grade, CRAIG BLAKE (#671) made his second hundred in only his third innings for Waratahs, with 150 of Waratahs 8-279.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
