Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) - Our Record
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 11, 2025

Waratahs played cricket in Armidale from 1950 through to 2006, usually with at least two grades, often three and during the 1980’s five. in Waratahs peak season of 1988-89, 96 players turned out.
In most seasons, there could be up to 15 games, especially after one day cricket became part of the mix in the early 1970’s.
That’s lots of matches, lots of players and a massive amount of statistics.
Thanks to the vision of two of the club’s finest, stats started to be gathered annually and published for members in the Waratahs Yearbook. Tom Cooke (#197) and Brian Joice (#218) were two of the finest cricketers in the field, making batsmen suffer for many years but the establishment of the Yearbook kickstarted a legacy that makes Waratahs stand out.
Carried on by several others including Peter Langston, Steve Reading, Andrew Davis, Paul Melville and Albert Hofkamp, the Yearbook with its captain’s reports, list of players and season stats then emerged into career stats.
Langston, then in retirement started a search for earlier records in 2006 by scanning the scores held in archival records of the Armidale Express and over a fifteen year period, developed one of the most complete databases of any club, at any level in Australia.
About 85% complete, you can find match scorecards from games across the six decades Waratahs played, individual player career stats and just about any lists it is possible to make from a set of figures.
These are regurgitated here in daily posts during the season in the On This Day posts.
Now a thriving social club, with playing days behind us, The Tahs is gathering former players, their family members, opposition players … in fact anyone who wants to join … and has developed a supportive atmosphere of connection. In the process and consistent with the strong sense of family that was the hallmark of Waratahs from its earliest days and the desire to always be regenerating the game as custodians, Tahs members also fund the Ian Campbell Scholarship - a fund which support junior cricket grow their game.
Those stats we talked about earlier are available for you to view too. Just click on the following link for a world of memories to come flooding back - particular through the match scorecards.
