ON THIS DAY - 3rd December

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 03, 2025

In 1960, TONY MORRISS (#78) completed match figures of 10-96 as A-Res grade held their nerve and completed a four innings cliff hanger, winning by 3 runs v Hillgrove. It was one of four matches where Morriss took ten or more wickets for the match. Only Brian Joice (#218) can match that record.

In 1977, SYD PHILP (#269) made the first of his four centuries for Waratahs as B grade scored 300 plus, setting up an outright win against Ex Services. David Wheaton (#338), then dominated the Servies batsmen with his best match figures.

Ex Services 179 (D McCann 83. David Wheaton 5-28) and 66 (Peter Baillie 4-20, David Wheaton 4-26) lost to Waratahs 312 (Syd Philp 104, Lyndon Strong 77, John Baillie 41. P Merrick 6-104) bu an innings and 66 runs.

In 1988, JAMES CAMPBELL (#382) and MICHAEL HANDES (#518) added 110 for the third wicket for 3rd grade v Centrals after coming together at 2-7 chasing 176. Earlier, wicketkeeper MATT CAMPBELL (#363) held 3 catches in Centrals innings

In 1994, MATT PINE (#621) was standed in 2nd grade, running out of overs in a 40 over game. After opening, Pine made 98 not out when the close came. As some consolation, he took 4 wickets at the end of Uralla's innings, almost winning the game for Waratahs.

JOE CAIRNS (#726), that very handy allrounder from Waratahs fifth decade, made his only Waratahs century, with 132 not out for 4th grade. Batting at three, he was the backbone of Waratahs innings in this one day game against Norths.

On the same day in 5ths, one of those Waratahs moments we cherish, when father and son shared the spotlight. Son MICHAEL ROAN (#611) and father ROGER ROAN (#176) addded 125 for the 2nd wicket v Norths. Opening, Roger dominated the innings with his only career century in any form of cricket.

In 2005, STUART McCLINTOCK (#870) made the last Waratahs hundred, making 106 not out for 3rd grade v Uralla. (no scoresheet available)

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
