ON THIS DAY - 19th November

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | November 19, 2025

In 1960, D BUCKNELL (#133) in A grade and KEITH McINTYRE (#129) in B grade took three catches in an innings and J BOUNDY (#118) did the hat trick as A-Res grade won outright by an innings against Teachers College.

In 1961, GEOFF MARSHALL (#156) took 9-64 for Waratahs against Easts in the Sunday comp. At that stage, Marshall was a young teen and it was noted in the Armidale Express that he bowled through the whole of Easts innings. The Sunday comp was a composite of all grades, played all day on a Sunday.

In 1966, TOM COOKE (#197) completed a disappointing match for A grade with grand figures of 11-51. Churches, with 7 former or future Waratahs players, routed Waratahs for just 52, with Don Foster and Brian Joice taking five wickets each.

In 1983, JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) and ANDREW DAVIS (#354) combined for a 2nd grade record partnership of 142 for the 5th wicket v TAS. Tressy went on to 111 but Waratahs 8-273 wasn't enough, as TAS chased them down despite a Victor Crew pfeiffer.

In 1988, that part time Irishman, MICHAEL MULDOON (#192) made his only Waratahs century, 135 unbeaten, as Waratahs ran up three hundred against an undermanned YCW. Allan Brettell (#509) took 5-33 in YCW's paltry first innings but it was Muldoon who took half of the wickets in the second as YCW's 8 players had a slog fest but didn't avoid the outright defeat.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
