ON THIS DAY - 9th December
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 09, 2025

In 1961, wicketkeeper batsman PETER MORSE (#19) made his only century for Waratahs, 129 as A grade batted their way to a very creditable draw against the immensely strong Uralla side. On the first day, Uralla batted their way to 1-291 - the one being Walter Taylor who had retired after his annual hundred against Waratahs - until John Roberts (#115) broke through and then the part timers got some cheap scalps. On the second day, Waratahs, with a series of partnerships built around Morse and some handy contributions from most of the top six, held on for a draw. In the end, they were only 24 runs shy.

In 1989, STU MacFARLAN (#606) completely blitzed Easts in their 1st grade game. Phil Melville (#542) and Peter Murphy (#535) had made short work of a new generation of Easts players who had first use. Waratahs lost early wickets in their reply, but with Daniel Ryan (#514) in staunch support, Waratahs went to stumps only one run behind and with Stuie on 80. When Ryan left on the second day, the pair had added 111 for the 3rd wicket but MacFarlan cut loose with 95 added before the declaration in only 15 overs.Easts steadied the ship before it was an early pub time and Melville finished with 8 wickets for the match.

Wicketkeeper CHRIS DUNCAN (#609) held 3 catches in an innings as 3rd grade did their best to defend 9-213 against Easts, finally going down when the last pair were at the crease.

In 5th grade, ANDREW DAVIS (#354), filling in as skipper with Tony Bennett unavailable, followed in the Bennett tradition and bowled himself to a hat trick. The full scoresheet is unavailable but Davo is happy to tell the tale.
