ON THIS DAY - 8th November

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | November 08, 2025

In 1958, TED CROTTY (#98) had his best match for Waratahs, scoring 119 after being not out over night from a first day where he took 6-59 for B grade v Dumaresq. He took a further three wickets in Dumaresq's second innings and made handy runs as Waratahs scrapped to a 1 wicket outright victory. Future Waratahs player Dick Chisholm had a good match for the losers.

Not such a good day for G BRETT (#92), who made a pair as A grade lost outright to Armidale Teachers College.

In 1980, VICTOR CREW (#399) made his only Waratahs hundred, after B grade rolled Centrals in just 17 overs (Bill Maguire (#401) 5-9, Mark Dell (#365) 4-11) and then piled on 4/216 by stumps on the first day. Craybob added 151 with MATT CAMPBELL (#363) for the second wicket and then watched Dell and Greg Johnson (#352) add a further 92 for the 5th as Waratahs declared with a lead of 308. Their eventual winning margin of an innings and 169 runs equaled the highest ever B grade victory made in December 1961 against Royals.

In 1986, CHRISTIAN QUAIFE (#372), grabbed three catches in an innings as TAS folded for just 37 against 1st grade. Michael Muldoon (#192) destroyed the bottom half of the order with 5-11 of five overs. Rain on the second day ruined any chance Waratahs had of an outright.

In 1997, ALBERT HOFKAMP (#476) was fitted with spectacles in 3rds outright loss to Churches. After Churches knocked up 173 against the 8 man Waratahs, it took them less than 12 overs to have Waratahs batting again. Bolstered by a strong opening partnership from David Norman (#407) and James Hillard (#592) which survived until stumps and blossomed on the second week to pass 50 and also the appearance of three extra players, Waratahs made Churches bat a second time ... but not before Bert grabbed his second duck.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
