ON THIS DAY - 24th October

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | October 24, 2025

In 1959, JOHN McINTYRE (#99) did the hat trick for B grade v Armidale Teachers College. After Waratahs struggled to make 130, mainly thanks to some late order hitting from Bruce McClenaghan, ATC were soon decimated. Col Marshall took a wicket in the first over and then McIntyre took a hat trick in the second, leaving the trainee teachers 4-2.

In 1964, BRIAN ROBERTS (#114) took 8-24 including the hat trick on the second day for A grade v Public Service. Public Service were 9-62 in their second innings, narrowly avoiding an outright defeat. Roberts had taken three wickets in their first innings of 109, giving him 11-80 for the match. The match was notable for the fact that Roberts and Terry Mackenzie (6-48 & 1-32) opened the bowling and bowled unchanged for the match. In fact, Des Lasker's run out in Public Service's first innings was the only wicket which didn't fall to them of 19.

In 1981, ALAN GRAY (#26) and IAN CAMPBELL (#212) added 135 for the 2nd wicket for 3rd grade v Uni Vets. It was a partnership which dominated the Waratahs innings of 182. The match was washed out on the second day, after Unit Vets were 4-88 in reply. During the their innings, Ian Campbell, in the rare role of wicketkeeping, picked up his only stumping.

In 2nd grade, GRAHAM PATTERSON (#346) held 4 catches against Ex Services.

In 1987, CHISTIAN QUAIFE (#372) and GARRY CLARKE ((#285) added 130 for the 6th wicket as 1st grade made 289 against Hillgrove. Quaifey made his highest club score, 121 not out.

BEDE RYAN (#503) and MARTIN HADFIELD (#545) added 107 for the 5th wicket for 3rd grade v Hillgrove. Bede went on to 144 not out as Waratahs ran up 7-298.

In 4th grade, wicketkeeper DAVE ROBERTS #484) held 3 catches as Waratahs spent the afternoon chasing leather at the hands of Hillgrove.

In 1992, SYD PHILP (#269) and CRAIG BLAKE (#671) added 141 for the 2nd wicket for 5th grade v Ex Services. It was Blake's 2nd innings for the club. Also in the same innings, STUART CUMMINS (#687) made 131 on debut - the highest score by any Waratahs player on debut in any grade. The astonishing thing about the innings is that it was his ONLY innings for the club!

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
