ON THIS DAY - 30th October

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | October 30, 2025

In 1976, BRIAN JOICE (#218), acting as a stand in skipper as B grade played O'Connor, took 7-15. No other details of the game are available.

In 1982, JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) made the first of three hundreds for Waratahs, all in 2nd grade and all in the space of 13 months. This first was against Ex Services and nothing is known of the details of the second day of the match. Waratahs had begun at 1-50, chasing 217 and you would have to presume that they got there as Jack had been not out overnight with less than 170 to get. This match was also Andrew McNeill's (#419) first game for Waratahs and although Rod Lockwood took the long handle to him while Steve Reading (#322) took wickets at the other end, eyebrows were raised among the senior players on either side.

Waratahs v Ex Services - 2nd grade, 23rd & 30th October 1982

1st grade only failed by 3 wickets to beat Centrals outright. After early wickets fell, Tim Muldoon (#296) and Brian Mair (#307) both made half centuries in a partnership of 81 for the 5th wicket before the declaration. Centrals were soon in trouble at 3-36 by stumps and crumbled on the second day at the hands of Joe Harrison (6-12). They took 45 overs to struggle to 7-130 by stumps, with GRAHAM FROST (#333) holding 3 catches in their second innings. Harrison ended the match with figures of 22-10-28-7.

Waratahs v Centrals - 1st grade, 23rd & 28th October, 1982

In 1993, in an unsual event, two players held 3 catches each in the same innings. MARK TANNER (#573) and MICHAEL JONES (#571) got their grabs as 1st grade chased leather on the first day against a very young Easts, who ended on 289 after batting into the second day. Included in their runs was a rare fifty from Mike Porter, playing purely as a batsman! More about this extraordinary game on the 6th November.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
