ON THIS DAY -

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 02, 2025

In 1962, RAY REEVES (#143) and LAURIE BLAKE (#126) added 101 for the 2nd wicket for Waratahs A grade second side against Churches. On the second week Tony Morriss (#78) took a pfeiffer as Waratahs forced Churches to follow on. This side was promoted to first grade after the second University side dropped out of the A grade comp. At the time Waratahs was undefeated in A-Res grade but they came into A grade with no competition points. By the end of the season, University won the comp with their two sides combined and both Waratahs sides failed to make the semi-finals!

The original Waratahs A grade side ran up 252 against Ex Services, With ALLAN COX (#160) and ALAN GRAY (#26) adding 124 for the 1st wicket - half the side's total. They accounted for Ex Services on the second week despite a Wally Miller hundred.

In 1973, Skipper ALLAN THOMPSON (#238) and GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) added 135 unbeaten for the 6th wicket for A grade v Unicorns. I a low scoring game, their innings stood out but Waratahs collapse on the first day was enough for Unicorns to survive with a first innings win.

Waratahs 52 and 4(dec) 172 (Graham Johnson 67x, Allan Thomspon 62x) lost to Unicorns 9(dec) 82 and 5-38

In 1979, BRUCE HENDERSON (#376) had the misfortune of a bowlers ton, taking 4-114 for A-Res grade as Hillgrove spent the afternoon sending the ball to all parts. Waratahs made a good fist of the reply.

Hillgrove 7(dec) 334 (G Edey 153x. Bruce Henderson 4-114) beat Waratahs 266 (Tony Bennett 74, Syd Philp 39, Shane Cridland 34, Warren Allen 31, Peter Handebo 26)

In 1984, VICTOR CREW (#399) and TIM MULDOON (#296) added 110 for the 3rd wicket for 1st grade v Hillgrove. Geoff Wood took a sevenfa with his spinners for the 'Grove. Waratahs varied attack almost prevailed on the second day but Hillgrove's deep batting lineup manged to hang on for the draw.

In 2nd grade, ROGER HAY (#427) and DAVID TILBURY (#302) set a grade record partnership, adding 110 unbeaten for the 9th wicket v TAS. JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) had earlier in the innings made 128 - his highest score for Waratahs - as 2nds piled on the runs to make 8-400.

In 1990, MARK DYMOCK (#523) and STU MacFARLAN (#606) added 116 for the 2nd wicket for 1sts v Centrals. Stu went on to 129 not out as Waratahs chased down Centrals 256, losing only two wickets in the process.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson, Albert Hofkamp & Peter Langston.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
