ON THIS DAY - 17th September
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | September 14, 2025
In 1966, BILL THOMPSON (#185) was bowled by Uralla's Kelly Barnden after making 99 on the opening day. His opening partner that day was debutant TERRY BETTS (#205), Waratahs most successful wicketkeeper, with 180 dismissals (155 catches, 25 stumpings) and a member of Waratahs best ever XII. Betsy also holds the record for the most career runs for Waratahs without scoring a century (2,699). He was a Waratahs and ADCA President.
Batting second drop that day was another debutant, GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207), Waratahs most accomplished batsman with 8,320 runs @ nearly 33 and more hundreds than any other player (15), sharing 14 century stands (equal most with Alan Gray). Then there were his 196 wickets @ 20 and 111 catches. He was an outstanding and shrewd skipper, winning Premierships in 1st grade and then during his second career in 2nds, before returning to 1sts for another two in the twilight of his career. Guiley was a great believer in the promotion of young talent and fostered many of Waratahs best players into 1st grade.
