Jamie Heath- young star shines despite loss

Belmont District Cricket Club | May 23, 2025

A blast from the past- Jamie Heath's first 1st grade 5 wicket haul.

Belmont Cricket Club's teenage bowling sensation shone despite miserable conditions. Chasing Wallsend's 1st innings total of 151, Belmont were always going to be facing a mammoth task due to poor weather conditions and a rain-affected pitch. In what was described as an ordinary batting effort by many, Belmont could only muster a total of 9d-58. Belmont batsman Eric Tyrell posted a high score for the Belmont innings of 36 no in these conditions, proving to be the only shining light from the innings.

Wallsend fared marginally better in their 2nd innings, putting up a score of 8d-70 before declaring after 40 overs. Jamie Heath once again proved his undeniable talent as a young bowler, taking 6/25 from 16 overs as he collected his first 5-wicket haul in Newcastle 1st grade. No doubt, this moment proved to be pivotal in the development of Jamie Heath. David Wilson and Eric Tyrell both picked up 1 wicket apiece to round out the Belmont wicket takers.

Being set what was deemed an almost impossible total of 165 from the remaining 26 overs, Belmont clawed their way back to a score of 3/79 before play was ended. Greg Charlton and Dave Sokulsky led the fight back from Belmont, posting scores of 25 and 29no respectively in the second innings.

The star of what was a rain-affected day was Jamie Heath, bowling 16 overs straight and claiming 6 wickets in Newcastle cricket's top flight at only 15 years old, showing again why he was a star for the future.
