Joseph "Joey" Gillard's cricketing journey began in Newcastle, where he played for Belmont District Cricket Club before moving to Sydney to join Gordon District Cricket Club.
First grade debut: At just 15 years old, Joey made his first-grade debut for Belmont in October 2019. He impressed by guiding his team to victory with an unbeaten 35 runs, helping chase down Toronto's total of 148 runs. In his first six innings, Joey accumulated 141 runs, averaging 47. Notably, he played crucial roles in successful run chases, including a 29* in a partnership that led to a four-wicket win against Wallsend. Joey is known for his solid defence, patience, and situational awareness. He adapted well to the demands of senior cricket, often guiding his team through challenging run chases.
Representative Cricket: During his time at Belmont, Joey represented Newcastle in the Bradman Cup, Newcastle opens and participated in the NSW Country Colts Championships. His performances caught the attention of selectors, leading to his inclusion in the NSW Country Under-19 squad for the 2022–23 Australian National Championships. In October 2022, Joey scored his first century in senior cricket, amassing 100 runs against Cardiff-Boolaroo. After establishing himself in Newcastle's cricket scene, Joey moved to Sydney for the 2023–24 season to further his cricketing career. He joined Gordon District Cricket Club, where he continued to develop his skills and gain experience at higher levels of competition.
