The club committee took a gamble at the start of the 1978-79 season in appointing untried captain Ken Lamb to take charge of the 5th Grade team. He ended up guiding them to the premiership. These are extracts from the annual report for 1978-79:
Committee Report
The fifth trade recorded a premiership victory and much credit must go to Ken Lamb and his enthusiastic bunch of young men. They were near the top of the ladder all season through and it is a tribute to the drive of their skipper and the enthusiasm which he instilled in his players that saw them gain well earned victories in the semi-final and final.
5th Grade team report
The 1978/79 cricket season culminated in the great thrill of being the Captain of the Fifth Grade Premiership winning team. I would like to thank the Committee for their confidence in my appointment as Captain.
We won the competition because we played as a team, practised as a team and placed great emphasis on our fielding. This paid dividends in the end with the taking of eight catches in the final. We also socialised after each game as a teamĀ and in doing so we built up team spirit and a will to win. The semi-final against Balmain was won again in the field, their bowling and batting being, I feel, equal to our own.
In the final against Bankstown, great bowling efforts by Peter Bishell and Alan Lane and our fielding, followed by solid batting won us the match with ten minutes to spare. A great season ended.
