Round 4, 2nd Grade 2015-16 – 31 October 2015 (Team report by Nathan Whittingham)

Sydney Uni had been the benchmark side in recent years, winning the previous four premierships in second grade. After winning the toss and bowling on a rain-affected pitch, we struggled early for penetration with Sydney Uni reaching 1/53 with relative ease, before Devlin Malone and Scott Pickering combined to leave Sydney Uni reeling, taking the next four wickets for no runs. From 5/53, Uni fell to all out 88 with Malone cleaning up the tail to achieve figures of 6-23 and Pickering 2-10.

With the pitch still relatively sporting, we managed just 181 thanks to a Matt Hughston 72. With a lead of 85 and still 8 overs left on day one, Uni managed to finish the day 2/39 with Malone grabbing two wickets late in the day. A couple of partnerships formed and the game looked to be petering out to an early finish until Malone struck again claiming three wickets in two overs. Wickets continued to roll for Malone, eventually ending up with remarkable figures of 10-115 to bowl Sydney Uni out himself for 268, 175 in front. We would require 176 for victory from 37 overs maximum to claim an outright victory. Peter Saroukos 44 not out and Matt Hughston 40 not out steered us home, combining to take the game with 11 balls to spare.

Malone finished the game with figures of 16-138 off 38 overs, breaking all sorts of records in the process, and thus also ending his run in 2nd Grade for the season. He would go on to take a further 32 wickets in 1st Grade.
