Brian Booth & Stan Gilchrist pictured at Sutherland's 50th Anniversary Dinner in March 2015, reminiscing about Sutherland's first 1st Grade match vs St.George in September 1965.
Stan Gilchrist is Sutherland 1st Grade player #5, having been a member of our inaugural 1st Grade team in September 1965. Prior to Sutherland joining the competition in the 1965-66 season, Stan played four seasons as a leg-spinner with Paddington and one with Randwick. Details from those annual reports are set out below:
Paddington Annual Report 1960-61
1st Grade 2 wkts for 15 @ 7.5
2nd Grade 29 wkts for 628 @ 21.7
P-G Shield 12 wkts for 199 @ 16.5
2nd Grade report:
Stan Gilchrist: We predict a bright future for this player. He will be a valuable asset to the Club in future years.
Poidevin-Gray Shield report:
Perhaps one of the most enthusiastic cricketers in the side was Stan Gilchrist. His bowling was mostly very good although his confidence lapsed under heavy punishment. A powerful batsman and splendid fieldsman, he proved himself a worthy asset to the Club in this his first season.
Paddington Annual Report 1961-62
1st Grade 25 wkts for 592 @ 23.7
P-G Shield 15 wkts for 211 @ 14.1
1st Grade report:
S.Gilchrist played some hefty shots and he, too, has a good defence. In the team primarily as a slow leg-break bowler, he will have more success when he achieves more accuracy and variety. He has a good future as an all-rounder.
Poidevin-Gray Shield report:
S.Gilchrist took 15 wickets in four games for 211. He did the bulk of the bowling and often was too good to capture more. He was always safe in the field, but was out of form with the bat.
Paddington Annual Report 1962-63
1st Grade 13 wkts for 579 @ 44.5
P-G Shield 21 wkts for 282 @ 13.4
1st Grade report:
Still young and eager, Gilchrist is imbued with a desire to bowl the batsman out. He will try variety with consequent loss of control. A less imaginative approach based on relentless accuracy will be more fruitful.
Poidevin-Gray Shield report:
S.Gilchrist (captain) had a good series with both bat and ball, a knock of 51 not out (against Balmain) and 5-10 (against Gordon) being his best efforts. Stan was uniting and effective in the field, and endeavoured to inspire his team by example at all times.
Randwick Annual Report 1963-64
1st Grade 29 wkts for 600 @ 20.7
1st Grade report:
Stan Gilchrist was the team’s leading wicket taker and headed the averages. He was always able to get turn from the wicket and this was his main feature. His good work was, on too many occasions, spoiled by his inaccuracy. He provided too many new batsmen with scoring opportunities.
Paddington Annual Report 1964-65
1st Grade 26 wkts for 784 @ 30.2
1st Grade report:
Gilchrist had strange lapses. He is a fine cricketer, perhaps too intense. He can bat well, but he loves bowling. As to batting, two things require his attention – lofted drives to deep-off or deep-on are not a good risk when there’s a fieldsman there, and the flick to leg should be replaced by a shot with a fuller-faced bat. Conceding five runs per over, Gilchrist was somewhat expensive. He may be advised to bowl more to a set plan.
When Sutherland entered the competition, as a Shire resident, it was an obvious course for Stan to take to join the new club.
Sutherland Annual Report 1965-66
1st Grade 15 wkts for 490 @ 32.7
2nd Grade 2 wkts for 53 @ 26.5
1st Grade report:
Stan Gilchrist performed creditably.

Sutherland Annual Report 1966-67
3rd Grade 3 wkts for 69 @ 23.0
4th Grade 23 wkts for 361 @ 15.7
“B” Shires 4 wkts for 11 @ 2.8
Sutherland Annual Report 1967-68
2nd Grade 25 wkts for 435 @ 17.4
3rd Grade 9 wkts for 83 @ 9.2
2nd Grade report:
Solidity to the batting was imparted by Ron Neill, Ron Erickson, Grant Le Huray and Stan Gilchrist, all of whom have had a wealth of first grade experience. At various times these players had the responsibility of holding the side together and performed most creditably.
The new ball bowling in the main was handled by Bob Wade, John Philip and Glen Bailey, with Stan Gilchrist and the accurate Jack Slattery supplying the supporting spin.
Sutherland Annual Report 1968-69
1st Grade 30 wkts for 851 @ 28.4
Rothmans L/O 5 wkts for 69 @ 13.8
2nd Grade 11 wkts for 144 @ 13.1
1st Grade report:
Leading the spin attack Stan Gilchrist had his best season with the Club, capturing 30 wickets with his leg-break bowling.
2nd Grade report:
Stan Gilchrist, although only appearing in a few matches, bowled well when called upon.
Sutherland Annual Report 1969-70
1st Grade 10 wkts for 246 @ 24.6
3rd Grade 7 wkts for 118 @ 16.9
1st Grade report:
Stan Gilchrist’s loss to the side after only a few games was badly felt.
Stan left Sutherland after being transferred to the country in his employment with the Education Department, eventually settling in Goonellabah (just outside Lismore). He finished his career with Sutherland with 144 wickets in all grades, from 58 matches. In all Sydney grade cricket, he took 316 wickets at an average of 21.6, including 155 first grade wickets at 27.3.
