This fortnight Howzat Building Waratahs in History Q&A saw us speak with the newest Life Member of the club Tim Cruickshank (LM #53), a club member and player for 19 seasons. Tim played for the club from 1997/98 to 2016/17.

Tim is the only MWDCC player in the 145-year history to score over 10,000 runs (10,502) for the club, He amassed this total from 354 innings with a career average of 32.92. He has 14 club 100+ innings and 67 club 50+ scores as well. To put this in perspective we only have 3 players in the club history to score over 8000 runs.

Tim captained our 1st grade to their first premiership in 27 years in 2014/15.

Tim was most recently seen at the ex-player event at Manly Oval where he spent some time with his old mates enjoying the current 1st grade team having a victory.

I remember a pre-season training session at Western Suburbs when I first came to Sydney and Australian cricketing great and club legend Alan Davidson spoke to the playing group about the benefits of hard work and training with purpose.

Mr. Davidson strongly emphasized the 6 Ps in cricket. Perfect Practice Prevent Piss Poor Performance.

All these years later I now know the 6Ps don’t just relate to cricket.

It’s human to want to know your role and not just in a cricket team. It’s in business, the workplace, and our personal lives. We all like to know where we fit in and the role we play.

The role of a captain in cricket is not just about what happens on the field or game day. It’s also important to know your players, what makes them tick and how you can help them feel better and more confident about the role you want them to play in the team.

A player who knows their role will tend to perform better than a player who is unsure and second-guessing their position.

Michael Back is UNSW Cricket Club first grade player number 67 having made his first grade debut during the 1985-86 season.

A wicket keeper batter with high energy levels Michael was affectionately known as “Stan” and today Michael is an oncologist (cancer specialist) who manages people affected by brain cancer. We dip our lid Michael.

Can you recall a catch or stumping that still fills you with pride and puts a smile on your face?

Rod Bower had a long history of dominating us with big off-drives. Jungle theorised that he was weaker off his pads so we decided to bowl continuously outside leg stump to the point of annoyance. Eventually after yet another one from seamer Tony Pratt moved two feet outside leg stump he immediately exploded on both bowler and umpire so took the opportunity to throw down the wickets…out stumped. The shouts on the field were only outweighed by the subsequent noise coming from the dressing room.

The South Queensland Indigenous Men’s team emerged victorious in the inaugural Michael Mainhardt T20 Indigenous Challenge in Cairns over the weekend. The team, boasting a formidable lineup that included several current Queensland Indigenous state representatives, faced a formidable North Queensland side fuelled by pride and passion.

Queensland’s latest addition to the talent pathway calendar, supported by Lords Taverners Queensland, featured a three-game series that culminated on early Sunday morning. After both teams displayed remarkable cricket skills on day one, each securing one win, the ultimate winner was determined. In the first game, South Queensland showcased their prowess, posting a total score of 119, propelled by a stellar performance from Gold Coast rookie Zak Patel, who scored 31 from 39. Despite a resilient effort from North Queensland, they fell two runs short on the final ball.
