Jimmy Maher - my greatest ever Queensland cricket team

Dean Tuckwell introduction

"Jimmy Maher first played for Queensland as an 18 year old and played in the Bulls’ first ever Sheffield Shield win the following season. He played in a further 4 winning finals including captaining the 2005/06 defeat of Victoria when he scored 223 in a man of the match performance. Queensland has had no more passionate player and he was an integral element of the state’s most successful era. Perhaps unsurprisingly he has selected 7 former teammates in his greatest ever side."

1. Matt Hayden
2. Bill Brown
3. Greg Chappell
4. Peter Burge
5. Allan Border - Captain
6. Martin Love
7. Ian Healy - Wicket Keeper
8. Ray Lindwall
9. Craig McDermott
10. Jeff Thomson
11. Carl Rackemann
12. Michael Kasprowicz

My Best Grade team - Ross Wallace 1971 to 1984

I was lucky enough to play First Grade cricket in Brisbane from 1971 to 1984. During this time I played with Sandgate, Valleys & Souths as well as having 2 seasons with the Colts set up under Brian Gaskell.

I have selected my “Grade Cricket Best 11” from all clubs not just the ones I played with, so I hope I have not upset anyone & more importantly I hope I have not missed a player I have forgot about. Obviously not having “My Cricket” in those days made the memory work a bit harder.

1. Sam Trimble (Souths) - Captain

Great opening bat for club & Queensland. Real guts player & a great bloke to talk to. The holder of many records & a pleasure to play with.

Gill Chapman continues to make indelible contribution to the game of cricket and the community. He’s been involved with Valley District Cricket Club for 57 years to date, plays Veterans cricket, toured with the Australian Over 60s and is a life member of Queensland Veterans Cricket. He played rugby League for Wests back in the 60s and 70s and was also a rugby league referee.

Who have been the best three fast bowlers you have played against so far?

Tony Dell, Ian King and Ross Duncan, the master of swing and control, were all great bowlers. Delly was awkward and King was sharp.

My first Shield game with Steve and Mark Waugh

The very busy schedule of the test players meant we didn’t get to see a lot of them, but it was great for us young blokes when we did get access to them. Their knowledge and experience was invaluable and I soaked it up. Because of their commitments against touring Pakistani and Indian teams, I didn’t get to play with the Waugh twins until our fifth Shield match of the season. We were at the WACA having a hit a couple of days before the game when Steve Waugh bowled me a bouncer. I ducked, thinking, What’s going on?? Is it some kind of softening-up ritual? He bowled me another one. Okay, I was getting rattled now. We’d hardly spoken, but had I done something to annoy him somehow? Did he just not like me? Then he sent down another bouncer. I moved from wondering if he was cranky to getting fired up myself. Tugga, as he was known to us, was the captain of the Australian team, an amazing cricketer we all looked up to. But in that moment I thought, Steve Waugh or not, if he does that again I’m going to hit him out of the net. Sure enough, the next ball was another bouncer and sure enough I hit it out. He gave me a satisfied nod and said, “I heard you had a good pull shot; I just wanted to check it.”

Today I share a success story.

One of our own Calvin a 14-year-old hit 66 runs to grant his team a win in the ongoing qualifiers.

This is a milestone for Cricket2Nurture in Uganda.

Calvin was among our first trainees when we started and only had one bat between 20 kids and used bricks as stumps.

It is really inspiring to see one of our participants reach such a stage and we have been fueled to do more.

On this note talent awareness is on. At C2N we believe that it's more than just cricket.

The world should get ready to receive responsible, caring, happy, educated, and happy men and women by using cricket as a masterpiece.

At the end not all will become professional cricketers but rather instil a spirit of togetherness in society that sport brings.

As a virus, Cricket to Nurture shall spread the love, joy, passion, engage, equip and empower the younger generation.

Join our cause with kind words, donate equipment, sponsor a kid, sponsor programs.

We believe many more lives can be changed under Cricket2Nurture.

"Joy shared is joy doubled and sorrow shared is sorrow halved."

"It is easy to build strong children than repair broken men."

I only remember Australian batters like Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, and Michael Clarke all walking off the field relatively quickly after they'd been dismissed.

Of course, they'd have been disappointed and frustrated at not being able to score more runs. It was their job and what they trained so hard to do.

But for whatever reason, they made a mistake, received a good ball, got mixed up on a silly run out or were on the wrong end of a dubious decision; that's cricket. It's part of the game.

What is also part of the game is when your turn to bat has ended, walk off the field quickly as it's now an opportunity for your team mate to take strike and score runs.

This may sound a little obscure, but my reasoning stems from observing the 'slow walk-off' from a couple of the Australian batters after they've been dismissed.

Are they any more disappointed and frustrated than their predecessors? I doubt it.

Hopefully, the 'slow walk off' doesn't become the norm for men, women, boys, and girls in state, premier, club, community, and junior cricket.

As a good mate used to share with the batter who'd just been dismissed, "off you pop."

In 1998 John Buchanan drafted in an American AAA baseball player and former Major League Baseball coach by the name of Mikey Young as our new fielding coach. Mikey was your typical fast talking, tobacco chewing American sports coach that wore a big bright white smile and an old leather baseball glove on his left hand.

The Australian Cricket team had arrived at the Gabba for a pre-season camp of which fielding was going to be a major part.

John Buchanan said with his slight lisp “Boyz Mikey Young is going to take us through some fielding drills today, and he will be spending the entire season with the team as our new specialist fielding coach. Please make him welcome.”

What Mikey said next in his broad American accent still makes me laugh but also still amazes me today;

“Hey Warno, I watched you on TV last night. The crowd loves you man. I watched you run after the ball in the outfield Warno (You’re not that fast Warno), then pick up the ball, off balance Warno and throw the ball into the catcher like a parabola. Do you know what that is Warno? That parabola throw means time. You won’t run anyone out and you will blow your arm out Warno and you won’t be going to the bank. I bet you like going to the bank Warno?”

The look on Warney’s face was priceless as all the boys sniggered.

“Hey Ricko (Mikey is now talking to Ricky Ponting), I watched you in the field. You’re good man. And faster than Warno. Why do you walk in every ball in the field?”

In 20 years of my then cricket life, no one had ever asked the question. Why do we all walk in, in the field?

“I start deeper in the field, then walk in to create momentum and try to anticipate where the batsmen will be hitting the ball to hopefully create a catch and/or a run out”

“So you’re talking about deception Ricko?”

“Yeah I guess so.”

“Only one problem with that Ricko, you do it every frigging ball. Where is the deception in that? You are also walking in ten metres every ball and if you spend one hundred overs in the field, you are walking an extra six kilometres you don’t need to be walking Ricko. Listen, think like a tennis player returning serve. Take two steps, split step and then go”

Jim Dayhew is a very proud former player of St George District Cricket Club. With strong family ties with the club we wanted to find out more about Jim’s passion and insights into the game.

My greatest thrill was to play a few seasons with St George DCC in my mid-20s. I was an eager and lighting medium pace opening bowler, who could do a bit in the right conditions. I played in the lower grades and was a mentor to the Greenies, where I was a coach. I’ve coached ever since in the schools where I’ve taught and set up a couple of Academies.

Tim Freeburn made his first grade debut for Sutherland District Cricket Club on 25 September 2004 and the proud owner of first grade playing number 208.

He played grade cricket for Parramatta, Sutherland and Bankstown and is now the co-founder and Managing Director of Sesión Tequila

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

Phil Jaques - there’s not a bloke who worked harder or put in the hours Jaquesy did and still does with his coaching.

Nic Madinson - was one of the most skilful players I got to play with. He’s still going well and will be back in the Australian team this year.

NSW Breakers star Ebony Hoskin joins Waratahs
The Mounties Manly Warringah Waratahs are pleased to confirm that NSW Breakers star Ebony Hoskin will join the club for the 2023/24 season.
A young fast bowler from Howlong on the boarder of NSW and Victoria, Ebony came through the NSW pathway system before making her debut in 2022/23 against Queensland, taking 3/34. She took a wicket with her first ball for NSW.
She has joined the NSW Breakers squad this year on a permanent basis.
Ebony has plied her trade with Campbelltown over the last few seasons but comes to Manly keen to make her mark.
“I’m very excited about joining the club, I’ve had some great conversations with the coaching staff so far and believe the club is moving in the right direction”.
“The Women’s program is still relatively new but the club clearly has big plans to become a real force.
“I also like the whole-of-club-attitude that seems to be a central part of the culture. Really looking forward to getting involved”.
We are looking forward to Ebony playing a big part of our 1st Grade side this season.

Greg Thrift was born and bred in the Hunter Valley of NSW, Singleton in fact.
He has a great passion and love of Cricket and continues to play and contribute in many ways.

I have a basic theory developed from Doug Walters’s book I read years ago. If it looks like it’s got runs on it, don't waste time blocking it, you've done the work, put into practice.

For example one Sunday morning playing John Bull Shield against Upper Hunter my captain Gordon Whatham told me to play myself in and there's a hundred out there today if you want it. The first ball went over long on for six, I didn't get a ton, I got 97
