Former Sheffield Shield winning skipper Phil Emery and legendary speedster Brett Lee have today been inducted into the Cricket NSW Hall of Fame at a luncheon on Day 2 of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s Pink Test at the SCG.

Emery and Lee become the 53rd and 54th inductees into the prestigious Hall of Fame that includes the likes of Don Bradman, Richie Benaud, Victor Trumper, Alan Davidson, Belinda Clark and Lisa Keightley.

The 1999-2000 season was one of immense change at the club. Gary Flowers had stood down as Club President the previous season after 8 years in the role and was replaced by Ron Holmes.

Ron introduced some big changes to our committee at the time, but the biggest challenge was on the field.

In the 1998-99 season our first-grade side finished 12th, while our 2nd Grade side finished dead last in 20th place. While there were green shoots with good performances in 4th Grade, 5th Grade and Green Shield, it still wasn't good enough for us as a club

Kudos to George Bailey and his fellow selectors for their willingness to make the tough decision to alter a winning side, selecting Beau Webster to make his Australian Test debut against India in the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Since the start of the 2022–23 Sheffield Shield season, Webster has scored 1,837 runs in 41 innings at an outstanding average of 51.03 with an IPF of just 2.93. These performances highlight his evolution into a top-tier, first-class cricketer.

When Usman Khawaja was smiling and laughing as Sam Konstas attempted to ramp Jasprit Bumrah on just the fourth ball of his second over of the Boxing Day Test, you could be forgiven for thinking it was the opening of a charity match, not the pivotal fourth Test between Australia and India.

The stage was immense: the Border-Gavaskar series was tied at 1-1 after three tests. The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground was packed with 87,000 spectators, while millions more tuned in worldwide. Amid this electric atmosphere, 19-year-old Sam Konstas was making his Test debut. Yet, with all the pressure and expectation, he had the courage to attempt a shot few would dare in the opening overs of a Test match.

Our last PGs title came in the 1985/86 season.

It has been a long-time in-between drinks. We won our first title in 1949-50 and had won a PGs Premiership every decade leading up to 1985/86.

The team was led by batter Peter Wilkins who led both the total runs and best average categories with 191 runs at 47.75, closely followed by Tim Blank who hit 137 runs at 45.66. With only 5 rounds, one of which was washed out, and a final, they did not play a whole lot compared to today’s PGs competition.

First-grade cricket at Manly in the 1920s was dominated by one player, Les Gwynne.

Les Gwynne started his first-grade career at the age of 17 with the Glebe Club in 1913, and when World War I broke out he went overseas where he became one of the Services Sports Board of Control in London, and assisted in the formation of the now famous A.I.F. cricket team, first captained by Charlie Kelleway and later by Herbie Collins.

TS North Sydney's Jimmy Greenslade was at his destructive best during the First Grade T20 campaign in which the Bears made the Quarter Finals before getting tipped over by a classy Bankstown outfit. Greenslade has since travelled to Christchurch, New Zealand, to ply his trade for Burnside West Christchurch University CC, where he helped the club to their maiden T20 premiership before Christmas.

Born during the Second World War on 8 May 1942 in Alton, Hampshire, of the United Kingdom Martin went on to become an important member of the St George District Cricket Club during one of its most successful periods in its 110 year history to date.

During his career, Martin was given the nickname of “Big Fave” took 365 First Grade wickets at an average of 18.22 across 12 fine seasons.

Australia's most recent recipient of a Baggy Green, Sam Konstas, showed he was made for the big occasions when he stared adversity in the eyes and took down the best bowler on the planet in Jasprit Bumrah in his first test innings. But that wasn't the case when he arrived at North Sydney Oval wearing Sutherland colours in the 2022/23 season.

Olly Knight is one of the more senior bowlers in the UTS North Sydney attack, and thanks to an excellent catch by Timothy Reynolds at point, Knight had Konstas in his back pocket without troubling the scorers, as you will see below.

Malcolm Gorham was a scorer more in the Len Davis mould. At the age of 13, "Pencil" began scoring for Western Suburbs' AW Green Shield and Poidevin-Gray Shield teams, and he graduated to First Grade in the premiership season of 1972-73, taking over the role from Anderson.

Gorham soon abandoned the constraints of traditional scorebooks, devising his own format for a scoresheet that enabled him to record the progress of a game in a far more detailed way. Like most scorers, he had his idiosyncrasies, including a habit of leaving the Pratten Park scorebox a couple of times a day to walk a lap of the ground

Rajveer Masrani is a top-order batsman and fast bowler who joined Western Suburbs District Cricket Club at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.

At 15 years of age, Rajveer has already progressed up the ranks into 3rd grade and has shown great skill, control and maturity with his cricketing abilities.

In Round 5 of the 2024-25 season, Rajveer scored a blistering 71 runs off 69 balls in a convincing win against Sydney in fourth grade.

UTS North Sydney stamped their authority on the match from the very start, as captain Glenn Aitken won the toss and confidently chose to bat first.

His decision was vindicated with a commanding performance that saw North Sydney dominate with both bat and ball to secure a clinical victory over Western Suburbs.

On this his 75th birthday (December 28th) it’s an appropriate opportunity to recognise the outstanding career of St George Hall of Fame member, Steve Bernard.

In his early career Bernard was known for his pace and venom, at St George he developed greater wile and cunning while still possessing the ability to put the batsman on the back foot. These skills saw him finish his six seasons at St George with 212 first grade wickets at 14.58. Remarkably he captured these wickets at a rate of one wicket every seven overs, any wonder he was the ‘go to’ for his captain.

Steve Smith scored his 34th Test century today at the MCG. He is now level on 34 with Sunil Gavaskar, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara and Younis Khan and behind only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), Ricky Ponting (41), Kumar Sangakkara (38), Rahul Dravid (36) and Joe Root (36).

It was scored in his 201st innings. The only players to score their 34th Test century in less innings were Sachin Tendulkar (192 inns) and Ricky Ponting (194 inns).

This was actually a lot harder than I first thought.

I played 5 years with Campbelltown in first grade from the age of 15 years to 20 and then moved to Mosman Cricket Club and played 10 seasons

I decided to include all players, despite their state or international duties. This team would beat most international sides on their day!

In 2023 at the St George DCC Annual Dinner, two more St George legends, this time from the 1980's, were inducted to the Hall of Fame which is located at the Norm O'Neill Cricket Training Facility in Penshurst.

St George DCC First Grade Player No.285 - Geoff Milliken and St George DCC First Grade Player No.295 - Warwick Hayes, were both inducted to the St George DCC Hall Of Fame in 2023.
