Belmont District Cricket Club- Presidents and First Grade Captains Report 1986/87
As Club Coach it has been another successful season. The Club once again produced a very good allround season with all sides performing to the Club's satisfaction. To the First XI, we almost availed ourselves another premiership, playing average cricket. If we all play to our ability in 1987/88 maybe Major and Minor Premierships could be our reward.

I’d like to see cricket’s governing body reconsider the rule that automatically deems a ball bowled by a spinner down the leg side as a wide in limited over and T20 cricket. Instead, the interpretation of a wide for spinners should align with the standards used in Test, first-class, and other red-ball cricket formats.

If a spinner bowls a delivery that spins past the batter’s pads without making contact, it’s in my opinion poor or lazy batting. Penalising the bowler and fielding team in such cases seems unjustified.
If a spinner chooses to bowl down the leg side, trusting their skill and the keeper’s ability to cleanly collect the ball, all kudos to the bowler.
It’s particularly unfair when a spinner lands the ball on off or middle stump, and it turns sharply past the batter’s bat and pads only to be called a wide. In such scenarios, the onus should be on the batter to be better.
This rule adjustment would encourage spinners to keep spinning the ball (which is what we all want) and encourage batters rather than unfairly penalising bowlers.

Merilyn Fowler (née Earle) is considered cricket royalty at Hawkesbury Cricket Club.
For over 25 years, Merilyn served as a scorer for the club, and her dedication was recognized with Life Membership in 2000.
In 2018, the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (NSWCUSA) acknowledged Merilyn’s outstanding contributions by awarding her Life Membership—the first scorer ever to receive this honor. This recognition was well-deserved, as Merilyn was a driving force behind the inclusion of scorers in the NSWCUSA and has been instrumental in pioneering scorer development and training throughout her remarkable career.

Led by Graham Howlett, Petersham-Marrickville won the 1961-62 under 21 years Poidevin-Gray competition for the second time in 11 years. The side contained many players who would form the nucleus of the club’s future 1st XI. Contrary to the team’s form the previous season when it failed to win a match, in a major turnaround, it won four of the five rounds to head the Southern Division with almost the same side.

1983/84 First Grade v. Sutherland at Caringbah Oval – Parramatta enjoyed an overwhelming outright victory over a shell-shocked ‘Shire Team’ – Parramatta started proceedings with a rousing total of 326 that was built on the aggressive batting efforts of Kenny Gentles 93, John Affleck 75, Mark Sargent 53, and former State player Len Richardson 30.

In an incident which strangely is not mentioned in any way in the club’s annual report of that season, an umpire reported adversely on the behaviour of certain unnamed players in the side.
It was reported in The Sydney Morning Herald of 22 February 1910 that umpire Mr. Newman, who stood in the match Randwick v North Sydney on 11 and 18 December 1909, was the subject of “insinuating remarks” and continued “harping” from the whole of the Randwick team (except the captain Charles Patrick) during the remainder of the match after he had given a batsman out.

Parramatta District Cricket Club – Bowlers who’ve captured 10 wickets in an innings
The bowlers’ nirvana is to capture all ten of an opponent’s wickets in a single innings of a match. Throughout its long history the Parramatta District Cricket Club has had three bowlers perform this wonderful and rare feat.
The first Parramatta bowler to dismiss all ten was the highly regarded colonial era fast bowler Percy Maybury who routed the Arundell Cricket Club in the 1883/84 season when he snared 10 / 21 (all clean bowled). In 1884 Maybury also starred for Parramatta in a match against the touring England International team claiming an impressive 9 / 81 in the visitors first innings.
In the 1943/44 season former Test and Victorian all-rounder Morrie Sievers, who was stationed in Sydney during World War II, grabbed 10 / 42 versus Western Suburbs – which remains the best bowling performance in the NSW Premier Cricket 1st Grade competition since its inception in 1893/94. In fact, only two other bowlers have taken ten wickets in an innings in the First Grade competition – Balmain’s Bill Hunt 10 / 55 in 1930/31 and Waverley’s Vic Jackson 10 / 78 in 1937/38.
Hard working medium-paced swing bowler Scott Philipson added this deed to his portfolio in a NSW Premier Cricket Third Grade match at Merrylands Oval against Macquarie University during the 1984/85 season. Scott seized a useful 10 / 43.

We continue our series on St George DCC First Grade Players - Roy Gray Player No.94.
In the scheme of things Rev. Canon Roy Gray just might be one of the more important cricketers to represent St George DCC. We all know the impact that Brian Booth had on our club over his magnificent life. What many of us would not know is that Brian considered Roy Gray to be one the most influential figures in his life.

See below Captains Ian Howell’s summary in our 1976-77 Annual Report.

The umpires ambitiously targeted an on-time start (much to my surprise – the scorebook and team list were still in the car at 9.27 when I was told we were tossing at 9.30), which was kiboshed by rain at 9.29. When the coin eventually came down an hour later, Sydney won it and made the fastest call of “we’ll bowl” ever recorded. We got underway at 10.45, losing just a single over per side.
