St George 2023-24 First XI (Part 2)

Now for the final 6 best moments of the 2023-24 season....
6. Ed Pollock scores fastest Limited Over 1st Grade century

After his first few digs in Australia it became evident that Ed was going to explode with something special. That happened in Rd 10 when Ed pulverised Fairfield-Liverpool for 116 from just 58 balls. We’re going out on a limb in suggesting that this is the fastest century in our white ball 1st grade history. He brought up his century from just 50 balls with a monster pull shot that almost made it back to his hometown in England.

A fresh-faced Ollie Sykes arrived in Sydney as a Surrey academy player through the International Cricket Programme with tremendous wraps on his ability to dismantle bowling attacks and single-handedly take the game away from the opposition.

He ended up living up – and surpassing – all of the accolades above during his season of Grade Cricket with the UTS North Sydney Bears and beyond.

“Getting awarded that contract was a dream come true and still hasn’t really sunk in. When I was told, my family stood outside the door, trying to listen to the phone call. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I believe I can go further now. I have since been told I’m getting a 2-year contract, so hopefully, it’s the start of a long career at Surrey.

The Gordon District Cricket Club was officially formed on 12 January 1905 at a public meeting in Willoughby Town Hall. The Mayor of Willoughby Council, (Alderman FC Petrie) was the Chairman and several representatives of the NSW Cricket Association were present. The new club took over the Willoughby District Cricket Club who had operated at Chatswood since 1900 playing in noncompetitive matches within the City and Suburban Cricket Association. This started the ball rolling on preparations for their first match later that year. Eighty seven names were handed in to form the membership list.

Elise Noble - Penrith Cricket Club First Grade Cap No 52

Growing up I was surrounded by cricket as my dad and grandpa coached my brother’s team. At a young age I played backyard cricket and transitioned into the U10's Modified competition, playing for Greystanes Cricket Club. At the age of 13 I began playing for Parramatta in the female competition Mollie Dive. I played at Parramatta for 5 years, working my way up to second grade and eventually first grade. In 2019, I moved to Penrith Cricket Club and have been a member of the first grade team ever since.

Kim Butler, Penrith Cricket Club First Grade cap No 16

Tell us briefly about your cricketing journey?

I started at Penrith for a few years then we were told they had to move into first grade but with all the older players not wanting to, the team eventually folded. I went to Bankstown being the next closest team and captained the first grade side in their second year back. I came back again when Penrith were accepted in first grade side for the very first time. I wanted one more shot at playing outdoor and have been there ever since, now with second grade to captain the younger girls coming through.

Julia Coote, Sutherland's long-standing first grade scorer, passed away on Thursday morning. Club historian Tom Iceton posted this obituary on the Sutherland website last night:

It is with a very heavy heart that I write these words from the other side of the world. It is my very sad duty to advise that Julia Coote passed away peacefully this morning after a battle with cancer. It is now over 10 months since we were advised of Jules’ diagnosis, which we passed on to the SDCC community at that time. Jules carried on her life over the last 10 months with a stoic attitude and cheerful disposition, accepting of her fate but not consumed by it.

The UTS North Sydney Bears got their season underway this past weekend with two wins in the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup, while PGs were defeated in the first match of their title defence, but what does the season have in store for the Bears and where are they looking to improve on last season?

The Bears finished 10th on the Club Championship last season, a solid result but disappointing after a strong start, with two grades missing out on finals on the final day of the regular season. So a higher positioning and several teams playing finals cricket are both being targeted this time around. Nic Bills has been appointed as Club Coach, assisted by Angelo Joseph, Liam Whitaker and Tim Reynolds, and several new players have seamlessly integrated into the squad following trials in late July.
