Charles B Barstow – South Brisbane First Grade Player Number 87

Charles B Barstow came from the Etons Juniors in 1905, and in his two first seasons with the club took 164 wickets. His 86 wickets in 1906/07 is still the greatest number taken by any bowler for the club in one season. Charles played for Souths from 1905-1911 when he transferred to Toombul under the Electorate residential rules.

Barstow was unlucky, in that he mainly played for Queensland before it entered the Sheffield Shield and was considered too old to play for Australia. On his day, he was reputed as being unplayable in club cricket.

In 1909/10 he took 10/34 against Oxley and also had Toombul at 8/1 at one stage against Toombul. He won 16 grade premierships with various clubs. His first class record was 78 wickets at 28.2.

Barstow died in 1935 at only 52 years of age.

Australian v Pakistan Over 50s Cricket World cup Final. Wednesday 5 December 2018 at Drummoyne Oval

As hoped, this was a classic final between the world's best over-50s cricketing nations. Both sides had cruised through the round robin stages unbeaten and their scheduled Round 5 clash had been cancelled due to bad weather, so there was no history between them. Australia had relied heavily on their top 6 - particularly their top 3, including captain Peter Solway, who was averaging over 100 before today - and a fit pace attack. Pakistan also had strength at the top of the order, plus a number of canny spinners.

The third player to achieve scoring a century and taking five wickets in an innings in the same match was Sutherland’s Ted Cotton, in the Round 13 versus Western Suburbs at Caringbah Oval on 7th & 14th February 1970, finishing the match aged 40 years & 190 days. It was a match that was significant for more than just Ted’s all-round performance – in the Wests innings on day two, former Australian captain Bob Simpson made the highest score ever made at Caringbah/Glenn McGrath Oval.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 5th Grade premiers 2010-11

Standing: Louie Anderson, Ash Virdi, Jarrod Rawlings, Mitchell Pugh, Toby Poole, Tom Kaye, Ryan Farrell, Dave Farrell
Kneeling: James Boyer, Matt Butcher, Cameron Ashe, James Ritchie

In 2010/11 the club won its first ever 5th grade Premiership. Led by the inspirational Dave Farrell, it was a fantastic outright victory against Minor Premiers Eastern Suburbs, but not before a few heart palpitations.

After bowling out Easts or 111 thanks to 3 wickets each to Matt Butcher and Ash Virdi, the Tahs then pilled on 274 runs thanks to half centuries to James Boyer (60) and James Ritchie (52*), as well as 48 from Jarrod Rawlings. Victory seemed secured.

However, Easts came out swinging, hitting 7 for 300, setting us 140 runs to win or 38 overs to bat it out. And bat it out we did….. but only just, finishing the 38 overs on 7 or 108, James Ritchie against standing out with 28*.

A couple of weeks ago marked a significant milestone for Cricket Mentoring as we stepped onto the field for our first ever competitive matches.

In early May, I got a message from the father of a boy from Sydney who had been affected by a fraudulent cricket tour operator. The father was desperate to get some cricket for the boys whose upcoming tournament had been cancelled leaving them devastated.

7 weeks and a lot of work later, we were competing in Northern Territory Cricket's Junior Strike League tournament in Darwin.

Vale David Morrow, 1953–2024

David Morrow was a magnificent commentator with a distinguished career in sports media spanning over 50 years.

Many will remember David commentating on cricket on ABC radio. David cherished the Sydney Cricket Ground and took immense pride in his induction into the SCG Media Hall of Fame in 2023.

David, affectionately known as 'thirsty,” was the ABC Radio number one commentator for almost three decades. From 1985 to 1996, David also called Saturday’s rugby league games on ABC Television.

In July 2024, the National Rugby League announced David Morrow's induction into the National Rugby League Hall of Fame, a truly tremendous accolade.

David Morrow covered eight Olympic games and six Commonwealth Games and was one of the most versatile commentators in Australia’s sporting history.

After a battle with brain cancer, David Morrow sadly passed away on July 17, 2024.

RIP David Morrow.

Cricket clubs foster a sense of belonging and connection. The mateship and support structures we all experience are invaluable, as is our capacity to rally as a community when one of our own needs support.

Karl Hieser, Prahran Cricket Club Melbourne 2nd XI scorer, tragically lost his father (his carer) and his home in a house fire last Sunday night.

Karl, who suffers from cerebral palsy, is the volunteer every cricket club needs and loves with immense admiration.

He commenced scoring Prahran 2nd grade games back in 1992–93 and, for over 30 years, has scored more than 500 games of cricket.

Karl’s invaluable contribution and influence within the Prahran Cricket Club have seen him afforded Life Membership in the club as well as being inducted into the Prahran Cricket Club Hall of Fame.

We’re hoping that in Karl’s time of need, the cricket community can offer our support with a donation, however big or small, to the following Go Fund Me link -

In Western Suburbs District Cricket Club tribute to Alan Wyatt (first grade player number 369), who passed away at the age of 89 on 11th July 2024, we made mention of Alan’s valuable contribution to NSW winning the Sheffield Shield in 1956-57.

NSW v Victoria in 1956-57 was one of the great games of cricket in Australian first-class cricket history and Western Suburbs Alan Wyatt and Alan Davidson made significant contributions.

Bret Kneller – Life Member of Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club

Congratulations Bret “Betsy” Kneller

Last Monday at our 75th Annual General Meeting, Bret Kneller was unanimously elected to receive Life Membership of Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club.

This title is held for our most exceptional members to acknowledge their contribution and service to the club on and off the field. Bret embodies this over many decades as evidenced in his endorsement by Life Member, Mr John Porcheron:

“I am pleased to endorse the nomination of Bret (Betsy) Kneller for Life Membership of Cardiff Boolaroo DCC.

In my time as President of the Club Bret was someone, I could always seek advice from with his broad knowledge of Newcastle cricket & what works & more importantly what what doesn't work.

The Knellers were the mainstays of the CB's in the 2000's - Bret & James both serving as CB president - parents Eric & Halina helping the CB's remain viable & successful. Bret has also served on the CB's general committee for many years.

After a major health setback Bret returned to the field with success & is still piling on runs in 3rd Grade where he also seeks to assist the talented young cricketers in our Club.
Currently sitting third in all time CB runs at over 7,300 as well as being a former seamer with more than 200 wickets Bret's ability speaks for itself in numbers - important in a game like cricket. I couldn't estimate how many matches he has played but it would be a big number.

Off field Bret is legend in CB folklore for the many nights cricket matches at his home "The Ranch" over the years where many unorthodox shots were required on the manicured pitch in his front lawn. He also specialises in trivia running many successful nights for the CB's & penning late late-night poetry over a glass of red or two.

I believe he would be a very worthy addition to the CB Life Member list.
