Toby Hynes made his first grade debut for Western Suburbs on 6 March 2004 to become first grade player number 603 for the Magpies.

Phillip Hughes – I was lucky enough to play in his grade debut. It was a One day game in 2nd grade game against St. George at Pratten Park in the last round of the season.

11 days after his 21st birthday on 21 February 1988 Scott Hookey made his debut for NSW in the McDonalds Cup one day against Queensland at the Gabba.

Hookey a big left hand opening batsman had a presence about him at the crease and on debut he opened the batting with former Australian opener John Dyson. The star studded NSW team also included Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Trevor Bayliss, Greg Matthews, Graham Smith, Peter Taylor, Phil Emery, Mike Whitney and Geoff Lawson was the skipper.

Brad Patterson made his first grade debut for Northern District at the age of 21 in 1981. He was a very proud member of the Northern District first grade premiership winning teams in 1985/86 and 1986/87.

A tall elegant batsman who actually made his first grade debut opening the bowling.

Brad’s cricketing journey has also taken him to places not many get to experience. He’s the very proud dad of Australian Test Cricketer No 457, Kurtis Patterson.

John Dyson was a determined opening batsman for NSW & Australia playing 30 Tests between 1977 & 1984 – not the ideal era in which to be opening the batting. 5 of his tests were against the West Indies in their prime and in 1982 scored 127 not out to draw the Sydney test against an attack comprising Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Sylvester Clarke & Colin Croft – no mean feat.

He also top scored in both Australian innings of the Headingly Test of “Botham’s Ashes” in 1981. John made 102 in the first innings and was the 6th wicket to fall for 34 out of Australia’s total of 111 chasing 130. He scored 1015 runs @ 63 with a best of 241 to be named Sheffield Shield player of the year in 1983/84.

Shane Mott made his first grade debut for Hawkesbury in 2002 and in a career spanning through to 2017 he took 369 first grade wickets at an average of 22.85 and took 5 wickets or more in an innings on 15 occasions.

Such was Shane’s outstanding efforts and service to the Hawkesbury Cricket Club, the clubs annual award for the most number of wickets in a season across all grades (1-5) is recognised in his honour - Shane Mott Most Wickets Trophy.

Martin Kent was a serious player.

Tall and imperious, he dismantled bowling attacks with copybook, powerful drives cuts and pulls. He was destined for big things when he scored 140 on debut against a test-strength NSW attack in the first Sheffield Shield match of the 1974/75 season but his 91 against Pakistan in 1981 was to be his last 1st class innings, his career cruelly cut short by a back injury.

Starting his career in the top order, his path to the Australian side was blocked by a strong batting line-up including the Chappell brothers and Doug Walters but he impressed enough judges in his first few seasons of Shield cricket to be invited to play World Series Cricket in 1977-1979.

NSWCHS returned to South Africa in 2003, with the boy’s team containing future NSW and Australian pace bowler Trent Copeland, who was selected as a wicketkeeper / batsmen. William Sheridan the Victorian Bushranger / Melbourne Renegades player was also a member of the team. The girl’s tour was dominated by ACT Woman’s representative Laura Wright. It was an incredible three and a half weeks, and we have posted some of the tour highlights below.

Not many can stake claim to a form-line as emphatic as Ravi Ratanayeke’s.

For the-then 17-year-old, it was as simple as having “read in the paper that an Australian Under 19 team was touring Sri Lanka… I set my mind on wanting to make the Sri Lanka U19s.”

Four games and 30 wickets later, the product of Kandy’s Trinity College was a lock.

The Book is a celebration of cricket and the fantastic people and clubs that help underpin it.

My mate ‘CAT’ says it is the best (and only) book he has read since year those bloody year 10 English Teachers at Mount Austin High School in Wagga Wagga forced him to read.. High praise indeed.

The Book is the best attempt by an average bloke and amateur writer to simply have a crack at something that was on the bucket List.

The Sorrento Cricket Club is very excited to announce the signing of Dimitri Mascarenhas as our Club Captain/Coach for season 2024-25.

‘Dimi’, as he is affectionately known around the club, represented England in both ODI and T20 formats, and during one match against India in 2007, deposited Yuvraj Singh for five consecutive sixes to close out their innings.

He has an ECB Level 3 coaching qualification and has held coaching roles at Hampshire, Middlesex, the Rajasthan Royals and the Hobart Hurricanes. In June 2015, after a tenure as the head coach of domestic side, Otago, Dimi was appointed as a full-time bowling coach with New Zealand.

He brings a wealth of experience to the role and we are very excited for him to begin working with the club across all grades - especially our junior cricketers.

Please join us in wishing Dimi and his family, including sons Lenny and Viv, a very warm welcome to the club and the extended Sorrento community.

We were taking the field against the Primary Club (A great Australian Cricketing Charity) and I was pleasantly waiting at the top of my mark when the whispers started to race around my teammates as the new batsman strode to the crease at one for bugger all.

‘Is that Tony Dodemaide’? There was no sight of a 1980s style mullet from my vantage point so I couldn’t be sure until he was 22 yards away. Yes, a confirmed sighting of the bowling all-rounder who graced the test arena 10 times and wore the canary yellow cap for 24 ODIs.
