Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale played in the Armidale District CA (formerly the New England CA) from the 1950-51 season until their last game in 2005-06. They had a couple of amalgamations post 2001 - first with Norths and for one season with Centrals - before exiting after one last season under their own, defiant banner at the end of 2005-06.

A club to be proud of, it was at its strongest in the 1980's, not only winning more premierships with its depth of ever rejuvenating talent but having more members and more teams which spread into the junior ranks and the early days of women's cricket.

Keeping the records of Waratahs has always been important. Our Yearbooks are the stuff of Armidale cricket legend - a seasonal review of the club's activity, on and off the field.

Share Podcast with Rod Tucker | Life In Front And Behind The Wickets

Rod Tucker is a former Australian cricketer who has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of cricket umpiring at the highest level. Born on August 28, 1964, in Launceston, Tasmania, Tucker developed a passion for cricket from a young age, honing his skills both as a player and later as an umpire.

As a cricketer, Tucker was a talented left-handed batsman and a handy left-arm orthodox spinner. He made his first-class debut for Tasmania in the 1985-86 season, representing his state with distinction for over a decade. While his playing career didn't propel him to the upper echelons of international cricket, Tucker's understanding of the game and his astute judgment on the field laid the groundwork for his second innings in cricket - as an umpire.

What's your IPF batting index?

If you know the number of innings you've played at any level and the number of scores above 50 you can calculate your Innings Per Fifty Batting Index.

With the cricket season now done and dusted it is worth recognising that 50 years ago Victoria won the Sheffield Shield from Queensland by just five points in an era when top of the table at the end of the home and away season won the Shield.

This was undoubtedly a very strong Victorian team with a good blend of youth and experience under skipper Keith Stackpole but it was also a bitter sweet season because it also saw the end of the very talented sporting career of Robert Rose which was abruptly curtailed in February 1974 by a motor vehicle accident that saw him become a quadriplegic.

Robert's last innings for Victoria was against NSW in Sydney in January 1974 when he made 23 not out in Victoria's second innings as they defeated NSW by 7 wickets.

Sadly, along with Robert, three other greats of Victorian cricket in Max "Tangles" Walker , Alan " Froggy " Thompson and John " Barrell " Scholes are no longer with us.

Cricket is a statistical game, and while statistics don’t always paint the full picture, they’re a pretty good place to start.

Hundreds are the treasure, the gold nuggets we all strive for, but you can’t score a century without first passing 50 or worse, still sitting in the sheds watching your team mates out in the middle.

The very best in Australia since the 1990s has been Ricky Ponting, who scored 50 or more in every 2.63 innings of first-class cricket (including test innings).

Young Ollie Davies from NSW has only played 16 first innings but is a shining light, scoring 50 or more every 2.67 innings.

On Saturday I took a little drive into Birmingham to pick out a new cricket bat for the season (the 20 mile drive took me nearly two hours!) and it got me thinking......

I'm just a club cricketer but I'm very picky. I couldn't care less about the brand, all I'm bothered about is the feel of the bat, the way it picks up, is the sweet spot generous and slightly low on the blade as we tend to play on slow decks in Warwickshire.

I went to three different bat makers in Birmingham, the first place only had 10 bats to look at, none felt right, so onto the next place. It said it was open, but I turned up and it was shut, so third time was the charm. I met Abid at A7 Cricket, and I was with him for nearly two hours, I picked up at least 50 blades before falling in love with one particular bit of wood.

When I was younger and a better player I would get bats for free but now I'm older and sh*tter, I don't have that luxury. If I'm to spend £300+ on willow, I'm not doing this online and risk getting something that doesn't feel right.

In February, March & April why don't bat makers go on the road in a van and book appointments with clubs and players? If a bat maker booked in an appointment at my club (Kenilworth CC) at preseason training they would have access to 40 senior players and over 100 junior players, I have no doubt they would sell a good number of blades in one hit. Go one step further, could appointments be booked in for at home visits and the van is essentially a showroom? The batmaker could do visits in the evenings and weekends when customers are actually available..

Maker&Son do this with sofa's coming directly to your door and it works.

This is hardly the most innovative idea but I've never heard of a bat maker doing this, yes there would be overheads but if you used a free booking software tool such as Calendly or Square then plugged it into your website and socials you're off. The bat maker then just needs to market effectively to their local audience and do outbound calls/emails with local clubs, you could even offer the club a group discount if they purchase a minimum order of bats.

Anyways, this is a ramble but for all the cricket badgers out there, would you use this type of service....... 🤔
