Congratulations to Manly Warringah District Cricket for winning the Club Championship in both the Men’s and Women’s NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24 season. A terrific effort by all involved on and off the field.

To win the men’s club championship by 232 is quite incredible.

The points awarded for the Club Championships are a multiple of the points gained from each game in all 5 grades plus the Poidevin Gray and Green Shield games.

First Grade – the points from each game multiplied by 6.
Second Grade – multiplied by 5.
Third Grade – multiplied by 4.
Fouth Grade – multiplied by 3.
Fifth Grade – multiplied by 2.
Poidevin Gray – multiplied by 4.
Green Shield – multiplied by 2.

As you can see the higher grades receive more points, so I wanted to dig a little deeper to establish how dominate Manly have been across the 5 grades in the preliminary rounds of the 2023-24.

In the 5 Grades, not including the First Grade T20, Poidevin Gray and Green Shield competitions, Manly have played 79 games and won 60 with a winning percentage of 75.9%.

The next best is St George District Cricket club winning 54 games with a winning percentage of 68.3%.

Here are the number of wins for each club in 2023-24 in the 5 grades in Men’s NSW Premier Cricket

Manly – 60
St George – 54
Parramatta 52
NDs - 50
Wests - 47
Sydney Uni - 46
Easts - 44
Gordon - 42
Bankstown- 42
North Sydney - 38
Sutherland- 34
Penrith - 31
UNSW - 28
Campbelltown- 27
Sydney - 26
Fairfield - 25
Randwick Petersham - 25
Mosman - 25
Blacktown- 21
Hawkesbury- 14

It’s worth noting Manly won the Green Shield Premiership and finished on top of Pool A in the Poidevin Gray competition but lost to Randwick Petersham in the quarter final.

A mighty season by Manly, the benchmark for all to consider and reflect on.

Best wishes to all teams in the 5 grades who have made the semi-finals. Semi-finals and finals cricket is so much more fun, so enjoy and embrace the challenge and opportunities.

Marty had quite a spectacular first season with Randwick. He scored 53 in his first game against St George at Coogee to get him away to a season which netted 845 runs–798 at 72.55 in Belvidere Cup matches and 47 in the Reschs Cup Limited Overs competition which Randwick won.

It is finals time in Premier cricket in most states around the country and over the years there have been some wonderful performances by batsmen and here in Melbourne most notably Bill Lawry's 282 not out for Northcote in the 1965/66 Final against Essendon is one that goes down in folklore with cricket enthusiasts.

However almost seventy-two years ago, 23-year-old Neil Harvey did something that is also quite remarkable for Fitzroy CC in a semi-final in 1951/52 against St Kilda CC.

He scored 254 in the first innings in just 255 minutes and followed up with 126 in the second innings in 152 minutes as Fitzroy won outright by 436 runs.

In doing so Harvey became the first batsman in the history of District cricket to score a century in each innings of the same match and he did so against a pretty fair St Kilda attack that included John Edwards, Jack Hill, and Norm Lynch all of whom took in excess of 500 plus wickets in their career.

This fortnight Howzat Building Waratahs in History Q & A is with Nathan Dodd. Nathan played 8 seasons for the Tahs from 1998/1999 to 2005/2006 scoring over 3000 runs for the club. Nathan moved into the world of coaching with his most recent position being the Senior Assistant/Batting coach for the Australian Intellectually Impaired men’s cricket team. The team competed in the Tri-Nations series in November 2023 losing to the “Poms” in the final.

How did your love of cricket come about as a child?

Like most guys I expect, playing in the backyard with your brother(s) and your dad.

Who were your cricket heroes growing up?

Brian Lara for his pure batsmanship and Justin Langer for his doggedness.
But also looked up to most guys playing for NSW as a kid.

Workout tops and running tops that eliminate odour. No Timid Souls has solved the problem of smelly sportswear.

Independent lab tests confirmed that our ‘Glide360’ tops eliminate more than 99% of odour-causing bacteria. They start fighting odour during a sweaty workout or run, and they keep at it afterwards until odour is eliminated altogether.

Anti-microbial silver technology is embedded in our Glide360 tops and guaranteed to work for the life of the garments.

What does that mean for our customers? No two bodies or workouts are the same, but it’s common to get 5 sweaty workouts or 10 days of everyday wear from a Glide360 top without odour or washing.

Eventually, some salts and oils from our bodies will build up a little on the Glide360 tops and they’ll benefit from a wash so they’re ready to go again.

We’re committed to the pursuit of innovations that help solve problems for our customers. And that goes beyond the sports science, materials science and design expertise that make our products feel fantastic, work exceptionally well and look great.

From innovations that redefine sustainable sportswear, to unique crowdfunding solutions that boost athlete incomes, we're just getting started.

If you want to know more about our ground-breaking innovations, you can subscribe to or follow No Timid Souls on LinkedIn and Instagram. We’re on an exciting adventure, and we’d love you to join us!

For many years, I’ve had the good fortune of speaking to several University of New South Wales cricketers who played under the leadership of John Rogers.

John was the captain of the UNSW first grade team when they won the first-grade premiership in Sydney Grade Cricket for the first time in 1976–77.

To this day, the players speak so highly of John Rogers. These men are now in their 60s, yet the reverence and esteem they hold for John is wonderful and inspiring.

Since the moment I met John many years ago at a Sydney test match surrounded by four of his UNSW players, I’ve wanted to know more about his captaincy and leadership.

In response to a request, Chris Chapman wrote this about John Rogers:
