What is the true purpose of Coaching?

Have you ever stopped to think, "Why is customer service vital to a business? What's its true purpose?" I obsessed with this at Naked Wines until we settled on the simple answer - REPEAT BUSINESS. Once we pinpointed this, we transformed every customer interaction into an opportunity to ensure their return. Our customer service team understood their ultimate purpose and could measure their value and success, and we could shift from seeing service as a cost of business and more as an investment with return.

Now, diving into the world of Coaching and Education with SLOCOACH, I find myself asking a similar question: "What's the key reason for Coaching?" And I we've settled on a single answer - PARTICIPATION!

Hard work pays off!

I have been working with Callum Henderson over the past four years and it has been fantastic to see his hard work come to fruition with 32 competition wickets and 22 ‘2-day’ wickets in the QLD Premier Grade Competition this year. Whilst the statistics are always good indicators of performance, it is the speed, intent, and consistency of his bowling that is the most pleasing factor.

This video gives you a snippet into his journey both on and off the field. Callum has worked tirelessly at nailing the basics, following a periodised strength, speed, and conditioning program to get his body to a stage where he is able to withstand the forces going through his body at >130kph over a day’s play.

With a high training age, proficient movement patterns and hitting high numbers in some key lifts, this has allowed us to increase the specificity of his strength, power and running program to challenge his body. This has also enabled Callum to keep pushing his ceiling when it comes to what his body is capable of and the speeds that he can release the ball.

Over the past couple of years, we have been regularly experimenting with triphasic macrocycles. The triphasic principles of training aim to raise the athlete’s rate of force development which is key when working with a fast bowler. The nature of a bowling action also means that the faster and more efficiently the athlete can absorb and produce force, the faster and more effective the release can be. Whilst this has also added variety to the training program for Callum, the intent of the lifts and focus on bar speed have had an anecdotal correlation to his intent when approaching the crease.

Over the past four years, there have been clear focusses to Callum’s training with the following outcome goals in mind:

1) Increasing swing leg retraction
2) Limiting BF contact time
3) Reducing the amortisation of the front knee during FFC
4) Increasing velocity throughout the latter stages of the run up
5) Limiting GCT during the latter stages of the run up
6) Increasing bowling arm speed (Heavy and light weighted ball bowling)
7) “Attacking” the crease.
8) Creating clear pre-ball and post-ball processes

The above does not happen overnight and cannot happen without a baseline of strength, proficient movement mechanics, soft tissue resilience and joint stability.

I had a young coach ask me recently for my advice on coaching and a career in it. He really loves coaching cricket, and his aim is to follow that passion and work in the sport fulltime in the future.

We had a lengthy discussion and whilst I could certainly answer plenty of questions for him, some were quite tough, and a few queries were on issues that either I had long forgotten or possibly never thought about.

Basically, when I was a kid most of what I did revolved around sport. Our family owned a tennis centre and my dad, and his brother were fulltime tennis coaches. I played plenty of tennis on our courts after school and quickly got into cricket, Australian rules and rugby league which meant every afternoon, evening and all weekend was occupied with sport. Like lots of kids all I wanted to do was play for Australia - Davis Cup, Test cricket, VFL etc, etc - unrealistic but a pretty healthy way to grow up!

The game now demands more knowledge.

The current era of cricket makes it imperative that coaches adhere to the principle of 'The governing dynamics of coaching'.

You have to have knowledge of all aspects of bowling performance. It's no longer OK just to say the same things as your former coaches said to you.

It's no longer good enough just to focus on past playing experiences. That's OK for tactical awareness, which is only 1 aspect of the Fergus Connolly 4-CoActive model.

There is so much more that happens before you get to the WHERE to bowl.

In the past, you had an OFF SEASON and an IN SEASON. wherever you were in the world. Some had longer than others, but there was a definite block pattern to the bowlers' calendar year.

That no longer exists. With the continued focus and growth of franchise cricket, planning, workload management, and periodisation become the number one priority in coach education in my view. When I talk about periodisation, no, it's not only S&C PHYSICAL TRAINING it's also TECHNICAL and TACTICAL planning. All aspects of bowling must be planned together so everything compliments each other. For example, you can't work on technical changes if you're hitting a hard hypertrophy block in the gym.

This is why you must have knowledge on all aspects.

A bowling coach needs to have an impact at all levels.

• Long term bowling development. So, a 3+ year plan
• An off season periodised plan for individuals and the team/bowling group
• An in season morpho cycle understanding. How to get bowlers to peak on game day
• Franchise morphocycle understanding. How to recover from match days and how to get IMMEDIATE PERFORMANCE benefits on match days. Yes, with the correct planning and training techniques, you can get bowlers to bowl sharper, faster with more clarity of thought in a day. Tricking the brain and potentiating the nervous system.

Now is the time for progression and to push the boundaries of what has been traditionally thought of as "bowling coaching." Times have changed, the game has changed, we now need to be better as coaches.

It’s quite remarkable… a few weeks back I was presenting at the Cricket South Africa Level 3. Wow! 5 ex-South African cricketers in the room.

I was presenting on Coaching Performance.

During the presentation, we got to talking about the experience cricketers have when they are playing at their best. I got to share the fairly consistent pattern I became aware of as I have spoken with my elite clients on the times they play and perform at their best. What was remarkable was that I got 5 head nods in the process.

*The explanation below has… for different athletes, different variations in intensity, and at times has a couple of extra steps… however, these few steps are fairly consistent.

If you bowl 90+ mph you can be carried

You can be a 1 dimensional (1D) player

If you bowl anything less you’ll be better off spending time on the other aspects of your game than trying to get that small % gain.

Below 85mph you have to be 3 dimensional (3D)

You know deep down if you bowl rapid. I mean proper pace not Instagram pace. If you’ve not been the fastest growing up, trust me you’re not magically going to be the fastest past the age of 20!!

Spend time working on your batting and fielding. You can still be really successful but work on become 3D. Become the 3 dimensional player not that bowler who spends 99% of the time trying to improve 1mph. Going from 79 to 80mph. Those speeds will never allow you to be the 1 dimensional professional cricketer

Taylors Lakes Cricket Club is seeking applicants for the role of senior playing/non-playing coach. The role has become vacant due to the unexpected resignation of incumbent

Based at Lionheart Reserve, Taylors Lakes, the club is affiliated with the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) where it currently fields four senior teams. The club is also affiliated with the NWMCA where it fields one senior team and seven junior teams. Formed in 1982, the club is about to enter its 8th season in the VSDCA.

Today I share a success story.

One of our own Calvin a 14-year-old hit 66 runs to grant his team a win in the ongoing qualifiers.

This is a milestone for Cricket2Nurture in Uganda.

Calvin was among our first trainees when we started and only had one bat between 20 kids and used bricks as stumps.

It is really inspiring to see one of our participants reach such a stage and we have been fueled to do more.

On this note talent awareness is on. At C2N we believe that it's more than just cricket.

The world should get ready to receive responsible, caring, happy, educated, and happy men and women by using cricket as a masterpiece.

At the end not all will become professional cricketers but rather instil a spirit of togetherness in society that sport brings.

Rod's rocket and Symo's freedom

As a coach now, I often think of Symo and I and always try to coach more like I am coaching Symo. When talking to players, I like to talk more about what they are capable of and less about what their limitations are. I certainly don’t blame coaches for the way that I played, but I would have to say that in many ways, they shaped the player I became

The greatest positive example I have of this as a player was when I went to the Cricket Academy in Adelaide and was coached by Rodney Marsh. Rod was my hero and the reason I changed from being right-handed to left-handed (at an early age), although things didn’t get off on the right foot
