Week 13 – ‘The Opening Spell’

In this week's edition of 'The Opening Spell', we're re-opening the record books to once again highlight one of the competition's all-time greats and introduce some first-timers too!

First ball – 😄 (Eastern Suburbs and Manly Warringah coaching staff on Monday)

Eastern Suburbs produced a ‘Dolphwash’ in the men’s competition over the weekend, winning five out five fixtures against Sutherland, as well as their AW Green Shield opener against Fairfield-Liverpool.
Manly Warringah did the same in the women’s competition, claiming wins over Bankstown and Sydney University across their four grades.

Congratulations to Nathan Lyon for joining the 500 wicket spinners club - a special group reserved for the greats of the game - Warney, Murali & Kumble & one of only 8 bowlers in Test history to reach the milestone. Growing up in Young, a 4 hour drive from Sydney, Lyon was thrown into the cricketing deep end and recalls his baptism of fire fondly:

“I was a pretty tiny fella growing up and I was also playing A-Grade at the age of 12 and that was against men. And they didn’t hold back at all. That was the deal. I was there to compete, like anyone else,” Lyon said.

"You learn a lot quicker as a country kid, I dare say. It was pretty amazing."

His dream of playing for Australia looked all but gone as he worked hard as a groundsman at the Adelaide Oval, having moved to South Australia for opportunity.

Veterans Cricket Australia is thrilled to unveil the 14-player squad that will represent Australia in the upcoming O50's Tour of New Zealand in March 2024.

The tour to New Zealand marks the beginning of a significant year for the Australian team, leading up to the Over 50's World Cup in November in Sri Lanka. The selected players will have ample opportunities to showcase their talent, with additional tours to England and the World Cup in Sri Lanka later in the year. The squad was chosen from a pool of 34 players, all of whom remain in contention for future selections.

Andrew Knight emphasized the significance of the tour, stating, "This squad embodies the spirit of Australian cricket and is well-equipped to showcase the talent and determination of our over 50's cricketers on the global stage."

What a year this has been. Phew!

My little 11 yr old daredevil Kaya has hit another century, this time in Mollie Dive (Reps/district match) in the wet weather yesterday morning. In fact, she has taken a 6fa too and past 2 weeks she has been scoring 50s playing with both boys and girls and remaining not out.

Anyways, every century is a special one and don't know how many 11-year-olds have scored a century in Mollie Dive. ❤️💪🏏

Vale Alan Griffiths

It is with great regret that we advise that Alan Griffiths, 1st Grade player #40, passed away on 5th December 2023 after a battle with cancer. He was aged 75. Alan played six seasons for the Club, being a foundation player in 1965-66. He played 97 matches between 1965-66 and 1970-71, scoring 3071 runs at an average of 24.2, with four centuries. He also took 69 catches. In first grade, he scored 820 runs in 31 matches at an average of 21.0, with a highest score of 102. His century was scored opening the batting against Bankstown, whose opening bowlers were Jeff Thomson and Len Pascoe! He was a member of the 4th Grade premiership team in 1967-68 and the 1st Grade Rothmans Limited Overs Knockout premiership team in 1969-70. Some comments in annual reports about Alan included:
1965-66 “B” Shires (6th Grade):
“Outstanding features of the season’s play included the aggressive right-handed batting of Alan Griffiths, who scored 392 runs” (including his highest score for the Club of 146no).
1967-68 4th Grade:
“Alan Griffiths’ aggregate of 431 runs was a fitting reward for consistent batting, while his energy and anticipation in the field saved many runs.”
1968-69 3rd Grade:
“Alan Griffiths, who scored a fine century, showed much improved technique and earned promotion.”
1969-70 1st Grade:
“Opener Alan Griffiths showed determination of high order and was a most consistent runmaker in his first season in the major grade. He was also an inspiration in the field with superb exhibitions at times.”
Alan was an outstanding sportsman. He finished his career with SDCC at the age of 22 to pursue his soccer career. He played for Sutherland and then Marconi in the National Soccer League. His three sons, Adam, Joel & Ryan, all played for the Socceroos.
We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Leonie, his sons Adam, Joel & Ryan and daughter Ranae, and their families.

Queensland Captain Justin Poole to Lead the Charge.

Following an intense selection process which included the recent O40's National Championships in Brisbane in November, Veterans Cricket Australia is delighted to unveil the squad that will proudly represent Australia at the inaugural Over 40's Cricket World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa. The team will be captained by the experienced and formidable Justin Poole from Queensland, a proven leader with an outstanding track record.

The selection process was intensified by the high stakes of the Division 1 Final, where New South Wales triumphed over Queensland. Despite the challenging competition, the selectors have assembled a squad that reflects the best of Australian talent, blending seasoned veterans with promising new additions.

Week 12 – ‘The Opening Spell’

On a weekend that promised a few big scores, one batter achieved a feat seen only twice before!

First ball – Doubling up!

Gordon's first-grade captain, Tym Crawford, delivered just the third double-century in the history of the Sydney first-grade Limited-Overs Cup competition on Saturday at Chatswood Oval. This competition has been contested from 1967/68 to 1975/76, from 1985/86 to 1987/88, and continuously since 1992/93.

Crawford sent 10 deliveries sailing over the boundary rope on the full and 14 along the ground on the way to an unbeaten innings of 205 runs from only 140 balls against a Penrith bowling attack. His extraordinary batting performance comes exactly one week after scoring an outstanding century (101) against UTS North Sydney.

Western Suburbs performance of the week is Jack Clark. Jack lead his 5th Grade side in absence of Mark Lewis at the ripe age of 17 years old. His calm, mature presence helped our young side chase down 182 in the 45th over against an experienced Norths side. His captaincy and performance was commended by the opposition and his team. Well done Jack! We have no doubt we will see Jack lead sides in the higher grades for years to come.

Round 9 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season takes on a special significance for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club and Manly Warringah District Cricket Club.

On Saturday 16 December 2023 Western Suburbs and Manly will play an historic day night at Wade Park in Orange in the Central West of New South Wales, some 250 kilometres west of Sydney.

It is a tremendous initiative by both clubs and an exciting weekend for all cricket fans in Orange and surrounding districts.

The brainchild of Manly’s Vice President David Gainsford and Western Suburbs President Mike Swan. Both should be congratulated for their proactive support for regional cricket in New South Wales.

David Gainsford has a very strong connection with cricket in the country as he spent his early years in Narromine and his father Brian was a long serving Chairman of Country Cricket NSW.

Australia's squad has been locked in for the men's Under 19 World Cup in South Africa early next year

Australia have finalised their squad for January's ICC Under-19 World Cup, as they hunt a fourth title in the men’s competition.

The squad of 15 features a strong contingent of players who featured in the dual U19 Ashes series’ this year, with Australia winning eight games to England's three across all three formats.

The U19 Male National Championships wrapped up in Albury on Thursday, giving players one final chance to impress selectors before the World Cup in South Africa.

Five prominent members of the NSW Cricket community were honoured last night when they were awarded life membership of the Sydney Cricket Ground at a special function held on the SCG field of play and in front of the heritage Members and Ladies pavilions.

Former Test greats Belinda Clark AO, Glenn McGrath AM, Mark Taylor AO and Steve Waugh AO were joined by Cricket NSW Vice Patron, Basil Sellers AM, in the group of 12 newly announced SCG life members that grew the ranks honoured with that title from 33 to 45.

Week 11 – ‘The Opening Spell’

Coaches scoring centuries, undefeated teams and the talent of tomorrow!

First ball – Zero to hero!

St George-Sutherland Brewer Shield captain, Lucia Martin, was dismissed for a second-ball duck against Gordon at Killara Park. Her side would set a seemingly surmountable 85-run target for the Deers.

However, Martin did not accept defeat, rather producing an all-time captain’s spell, taking seven wickets to limit her opponents to 78 all-out. St George-Sutherland sit in third position on the competition ladder following their weekend win.
