On the 8th of November 2022, Archie Gray lost his eleven and a half, month courageous battle with brain cancer. Archie was just 17 years of age. An absolutely outstanding and talented cricketer for Western Suburbs Cricket Club, who describe Archie as a "GUN". Archie at the age of 16, debuted in second grade, alongside his elder brother Finn. Archie was a year 11 student at St Patrick’s College Strathfield, who was a friend to so many within the cricketing community.

Archie’s last game of cricket was Western Suburbs vs Manly at Pratten Park, Ashfield and his last 4 days of life were spent at Bear Cottage Manly. For this reason, the 2 clubs have come together to create a spectacular T20 cricketing event, with a mix of current players and yester-year players (celebrities), to celebrate Archie’s passion for cricket and continue to raise awareness of brain cancer through Mark Hughes Foundation.

Five things we learned from Round 2 - NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24

It’s taken Brendon Piggott a few seasons to climb through the ranks at Sutherland, but on the back of a solid effort in Second Grade last season, he earned a First Grade debut in Saturday’s 50-over match against Parramatta. He didn’t waste his opportunity. Batting with the more aggressive Tom Doyle and Ben Dwarshuis, Piggott began in a quiet supporting role, showing a neat defence and a fondness for flicking the ball through the on side. But in the last six overs of Sutherland’s innings, he accelerated, helping Dwarshuis to smash 67 runs. Piggott crunched a short ball from Dylan Stanley through square leg for four, then took the attack to Evan Pitt, slapping a four through cover and steering the next ball through point to the fence. He brought up his fifty in the final over, nonchalantly picking up a good length delivery from Michael Sullivan and hoisting it over midwicket for six. The next ball, the last of the innings, was another length ball on off stump, and Piggott flat-batted it over long on for six more. He remained unbeaten on 59 from 57 balls, and Sutherland’s 4 for 239 was just enough to hold off a strong challenge from Parramatta (and Nick Bertus in particular). No matter how many more innings Piggott plays in Firsts, he’ll not forget this one.

Week 3 – ‘The Opening Spell’

Both the men's and women's NSW premier cricket competitions are now underway! That means more weekly highlights, milestones and wonderful imagery from the best grade cricket competition in the world.

First ball – Picking up where you left off!

Women’s NSW Premier Cricket First-Grade Player of the Year last season, Grace Dignam, has commenced the 2023-24 season in damaging fashion scoring 84 runs (71 balls) to propel her Northern District side to a season opening victory over Bankstown. Similarly, Sydney Cricket Club’s Eva Ragg top-scored (56) in her first, first-grade outing of the season to help set a match-winning total against the St George-Sutherland. Ragg’s spectacular start to the new season marks her first premier-cricket appearance at Drummoyne Oval since notching a grand-final century to claim the 2022-23 second-grade premiership for Sydney.

Behind every great team and player there should always be other players knocking on the door, scoring the runs, and taking the wickets to be ready and capable to come into to the team and maintain the standards and continuity of a winning team.

The Australia’s first-class cricket scene “The Sheffield Shield” had so many other players.

From a batting perspective.

Stuart Law – 27,080 runs at an average of 50.52 with 79 hundreds

Jamie Siddons – 11,587 runs at an average of 44.91 with 35 hundreds

Jamie Cox – 18,614 runs at an average of 42.69 with 51 hundreds

Brad Hodge – 17,084 at an average of 48.81 with 51 hundreds.

Martin Love – 16,952 at an average 49.85 with 45 hundreds.

All up, they scored 91, 317 first-class runs and a total of 261 hundreds.

Incredibly, of the 5, only 3 played a total 12 test matches for Australia. Brad Hodge (pictured after scoring a double hundred against South Africa) played 6 tests and averaged 55 in Test cricket. Martin Love played 5 tests and averaged 46.60 whilst Stuart Law only played one test and was 54 not out in his only innings.

David Warner has played 109 test matches and has said that he’d like to finish his test career after the 3rd test against Pakistan at the SCG in early January 2024.

It will mean sometime before now and then the Australian selectors are going to have to find a replacement opening batter.

Is it a little cheeky to say Australia future batting stocks resemble ‘old Mother Hubbard’ cupboard.’

Randwick Petersham v Campbelltown-Camden First Grade - Round 2 NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24

The World Cup may be where the big cricket is, but for pure cricket excitement, Coogee Oval was the place to be on Saturday. It was a 50 overs-per-side clash between Randwick Petersham and Campbelltown-Camden. And it ended in a spectacular win to Randwick Petersham in a match showcasing the magic talent of Daniel Sams.

An Australian T20 cricketer and a world-traveller in T20 league matches these days, Dan made a rare 1st Grade competition appearance leaving in awe those who witnessed his performance. With his team seemingly on the ropes at 6-115 chasing 248 runs to win, the dashing right-hander finished the day with 130 not out hitting 12 fours and 6 sixes off just 89 balls in a final tally of 8-253 off 45.3 overs. His 50 came up in 45 balls and his 100 in 72.

Western Suburbs and UNSW 3rd Grade played the 2nd round of the NSW Premier Cricket season at Blick Oval on Saturday 7 October 2023.

UNSW were sent into bat and were off to a brisk start with their captain Gavin Ho scoring 22 off 18 balls before he was judged LBW in the fourth over off Dean Jones with the score 1 for 27.

UNSW lost 4 further wickets to be 5 for 54 when a terrific 119 run partnership between Arunav Duggal and Abishek Mohanaraj put the pressure back on Western Suburbs.

Both Arunav and Abishek played very well with Arunav being more aggressive and Abishek playing a supporting role before accelerating towards the back end of his innings.

It's a casual and a late post...

Kaya has made an impressive start to the season, scoring 69 not out (10x4s and 4 x 6s) in her first match from just 35 balls. Despite the season having only begun two weeks ago, she has already accumulated 253 runs and has been dismissed only three times.

This year, Kaya is focused more on achieving different milestones rather than pursuing awards. She's working working hard and closely with her mentors to explore various strategies and approaches for the season ahead, so it will be exciting to see what she accomplishes.

Kaya's versatility is on display as she competes in multiple age groups and against both boys and girls, despite being only 11 years old. She has already demonstrated her skills against U13 rep boys teams like Manly, Hornsby, Hawkesbury, Fairfield, and more, achieving decent rankings in both batting (14th) and fielding (3rd). Notably, her U12 mixed team has won three out of seven matches, showcasing the girls' prowess in batting, bowling, and fielding compared to the boys.

Mosman Cricket Club is saddened to hear of the passing of Life Member John Cheadle. John passed away on Tuesday 12th September 2023, aged 95.

John Baines Cheadle started his cricket career with Mosman Cricket Club when he was selected in the Under 16 Green Shield team. He made his way through the grades and made his first-grade debut during the 1951-52 season.

John Cheadle is Mosman Cricket Club first grade player number 158.

In a first-grade career spanning 1951-52 to 1966-67 John played 193 innings and scored 4,464 runs at an average of 25.6. He scored 3 centuries, and his highest score was 122. He took 30 catches in first grade.

Overall, during John’s career with Mosman in all grades he scored 6,867 runs.

The much-anticipated match 1 of the ICWC Asia Cup of Wheelchair Cricket 2023 between Nepal and Sri Lanka unfortunately had to be abandoned due to inclement weather. The teams had to settle for 1-1 points each in this rain-affected encounter.

The inaugural ceremony, held earlier today at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kathmandu, Nepal, witnessed esteemed dignitaries from the cricket fraternity. The chief guest for the ceremony was Mr. Roshan Kumar Singh, Vice President of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). Mr. Singh's presence added prestige and excitement to the event. Additionally, the ceremony saw the participation of notable sports personalities such as Mr. Prakash Silwal, Secretary of the Nepal Paralympic Committee, Mr. Sarad Veshwakar, former Vice Captain of the Nepal cricket team, and Mr. Pradeep Aire, former national cricket player.

WP Connect Golf Day at North Ryde Golf Club on Friday 3rd November 2023

It’s Robert Radley former cricketer at Gordon and Mosman Cricket Clubs in Sydney.

I wanted to share some details around a little community we’ve created called WP Connect

WP Connect first came about in 2016, beginning as The Hope Challenge after a friend in our community lost their battle with mental health. While a shared loss initially brought a bunch of mates together, many shared our experience and felt the same drive to do something about it.

WP Connect hosts various events including The Hope Challenge and an annual golf tournament in hopes of raising awareness of mental health within the community. As of 2023 it has raised over $100,000 in donations to the Black Dog Institute; a proud result from a small community.

Black Dog invests in research, education, clinical services, and digital tools to discover new solutions and create genuine change.

Sydney University secured its advancement in the T20 competition with comfortable home wins over Gordon and Hawkesbury. The University pitch, it has to be said, wasn’t ideal for T20 cricket, being on the slow and low side (which is, in fairness, pretty normal for this time of year) and Gordon bowled well to contain the Students until Tim Cummins took control with an outstanding, unbeaten 68 from 38 balls. Cummins drove imperiously and, picking the ball to hit, cleared the fence four times to give his side a presentable total. Gordon’s chances appeared to rest on openers Axel Cahlin and Tym Crawford, and Crawford began brightly with a couple of meaty strokes. But the pitch always looked likely to suit Kieran Tate’s skiddy, stump-to-stump pace, and he bowled Crawford with his first delivery. Tate also removed Louis Bhabra in a double-wicket maiden, and when Will Salzmann bowled Cahlin, Gordon was deep in trouble. The game rather fizzled out after that, enlivened mainly by Devlin Malone’s mopping-up and Nick Larkin’s spectacular direct-hit run out of James Newton

Week 2 – ‘The Opening Spell’

History makers, wicket takers and record breakers. The men’s premier cricket season is back in full swing!

First ball – Simmons roars into record books!

Fairfield-Liverpool first-grader Jaydyn Simmons has hit his way into club and competition history, striking 134 (not out) runs from just 66 deliveries against a Blacktown bowling attack at Hurstville Oval. The knock, which included 13 fours and 7 sixes, made Simmons Fairfield-Liverpool’s first ever T20 centurion, and puts him at second on the list of all-time highest individual scores in a NSW premier cricket T20 fixture. Simmons’ total sits just five runs behind James Crosthwaite, who scored 139 (not out) for Manly Warringah against UNSW on November 11, 2016. The Fairfield Liverpool innings finished at 3-246, again second only to the 5-265 UNSW totalled against Eastern Suburbs on November 22, 2020.

The Chappell Foundation will distribute at least $1 million in 2023 to frontline charities in the struggle against youth homelessness, following our most successful Annual Dinner.

The 6th Annual Dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground on September 13 raised $480,000 net of expenses, more than $50,000 ahead of the previous best result.

Chairman Darshak Mehta made the $1 million pledge at the conclusion of the dinner, which pushed beyond $5 million the total raised since he and Greg Chappell founded TCF in 2017.

Darshak praised TCF’s homelessness charity partners as “the invisible heroes and heroines for transforming the lives of hundreds of desperate, young homeless people”

The NSW Men’s Cricket Team will begin their Marsh Sheffield Shield season at Cricket Central this week, an historic maiden First-Class match at the state’s home base – and the likely debut of a returning star.

The 12-player Blues squad, led by skipper Moises Henriques, will play Queensland, with the match starting at 10.30am on Wednesday and broadcast live on cricket.com.au, Foxtel and Kayo.

The squad includes three players that were not part of the Blues’ final Shield match of the 2022/23 season - Jackson Bird, who moved back home to NSW from Tasmania, Daniel Hughes, who has returned from the injury that ended his last summer early, and former Test star Kurtis Patterson, who has regained his spot in the 12.
