Adam Dilley - Life Member of Port Adelaide Cricket Club

Port Adelaide Cricket Club are thrilled to announce that Adam Dilley has been awarded life membership at the clubs AGM.

A Darwin local, Dills made the move down to Port Adelaide in 2004-05 season and quickly established himself as a premiere batsmen in the competition.

Mark Carmichael – Life Member of Gordon District Cricket Club

[Mark Carmichael was awarded life membership at the Stags AGM in July. The article below comes from the speech given by Geoff Hickman recommending his nomination]

Mark grew up in the south-west of NSW in Crookwell and came to Sydney in the late 70’s to commence his university studies. He started playing for Petersham-Marrickville and remembers his first encounter with Gordon in a 4th grade game at Turramurra Oval.

He has great memories of his time with Pete’s and in fact when we play Randwick-Petersham now he refuses to call them anything but Petersham.

From there Mark moved interstate and played in both Perth and Melbourne representing University of WA and the Melbourne CC. He also played in England during this period. When he returned to Sydney in the mid 80’s he played for University of NSW where he played the rest of his grade career.

Mark became involved with Gordon in the mid 2000’s when his children Henry, Matilda and Alex started playing cricket for Gordon. He managed the Green Shield side when Henry played and also was involved with Matilda and Alex’s junior teams.

One of Mark’s great passions with cricket has been watching his children’s games and getting involved by helping when needed.

During his time involved with the club, which is nearly 20 years, he has acted as a selector, Chairman of Selectors and Chairman of the Cricket Committee, as well as in recent years sitting on the General Committee of the club.

What is so impressive about Mark’s contribution to the club, is that for most of his time at Gordon he has not had any direct involvement with the club, by either being a past playing member or having children playing, with Henry pursuing his rugby career with Gordon and Matilda her cricketing career in Western Australia.

If you look at the club’s current Life members the vast majority have played at the club, in fact there are only 3 living life members that have received the honour of life membership and not played for the club.

So, congratulations Mark, it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to our club and formally nominate you as a Life Member of Gordon District Cricket Club.

What kind of club uses PLAI?

Established in 1838, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is among Australia's most prestigious and historic sports organisations. In 1859, it was responsible for creating the original rules for Australian Rules Football, marking a significant contribution to the sport.

The cricket club competes in the Victorian Premier cricket competition in Melbourne and has a long history of success within it. It boasts elite junior boys and girl’s teams, as well as several men’s and women’s teams in various grades. At the same time, the club hosts and runs its own competitive high-level competition, which includes participation from other clubs involved in the Premier league.

The MCC has been at the forefront of hosting significant sporting milestones. This includes the first English cricket team's tour in 1862, the first-ever Test match in 1877, and the inaugural one-day international cricket match in 1971. Beyond these historic achievements, the MCC fosters a dynamic and inclusive community, embracing participants from 12 different sports including baseball, bowls, croquet, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, netball, real tennis, target shooting, squash, and tennis. While the Club engages in a wide array of sports, its core focus continues to be on the effective management and forward-looking development of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, an iconic symbol of Australian sporting heritage.

Simon Porter awarded Life Membership at Waratah Mayfield District cricket club

Sunday 21st July 2024, we celebrated and honor Simon Porter, who has been awarded life membership at Waratah Mayfield DCCs AGM.

Simon's remarkable journey spans over three decades of dedicated service and excellence within our cricket community. His commitment to WMDCC is exemplified by his roles as first grade captain, Newcastle representative player, and curator for an impressive 25 years. Simon also works on Number 1 Sportsground and is regarded as one of the Hunter’s finest curators.

Notably, Simon was a key member of the esteemed Team of the 2000s decade, showcasing his exceptional talent and contribution to the sport.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Simon was honored with the prestigious Country Cricket Curator of the Year award this last season, underscoring his expertise and dedication to maintaining top-quality facilities for our club and the broader cricketing community.

As we confer upon him life membership, we express our heartfelt gratitude for Simon's enduring commitment and passion for Waratah Mayfield DCC.

Vale David Morrow, 1953–2024

David Morrow was a magnificent commentator with a distinguished career in sports media spanning over 50 years.

Many will remember David commentating on cricket on ABC radio. David cherished the Sydney Cricket Ground and took immense pride in his induction into the SCG Media Hall of Fame in 2023.

David, affectionately known as 'thirsty,” was the ABC Radio number one commentator for almost three decades. From 1985 to 1996, David also called Saturday’s rugby league games on ABC Television.

In July 2024, the National Rugby League announced David Morrow's induction into the National Rugby League Hall of Fame, a truly tremendous accolade.

David Morrow covered eight Olympic games and six Commonwealth Games and was one of the most versatile commentators in Australia’s sporting history.

After a battle with brain cancer, David Morrow sadly passed away on July 17, 2024.

RIP David Morrow.

Cricket clubs foster a sense of belonging and connection. The mateship and support structures we all experience are invaluable, as is our capacity to rally as a community when one of our own needs support.

Karl Hieser, Prahran Cricket Club Melbourne 2nd XI scorer, tragically lost his father (his carer) and his home in a house fire last Sunday night.

Karl, who suffers from cerebral palsy, is the volunteer every cricket club needs and loves with immense admiration.

He commenced scoring Prahran 2nd grade games back in 1992–93 and, for over 30 years, has scored more than 500 games of cricket.

Karl’s invaluable contribution and influence within the Prahran Cricket Club have seen him afforded Life Membership in the club as well as being inducted into the Prahran Cricket Club Hall of Fame.

Bret Kneller – Life Member of Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club

Congratulations Bret “Betsy” Kneller

Last Monday at our 75th Annual General Meeting, Bret Kneller was unanimously elected to receive Life Membership of Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club.

This title is held for our most exceptional members to acknowledge their contribution and service to the club on and off the field. Bret embodies this over many decades as evidenced in his endorsement by Life Member, Mr John Porcheron:

“I am pleased to endorse the nomination of Bret (Betsy) Kneller for Life Membership of Cardiff Boolaroo DCC.

In my time as President of the Club Bret was someone, I could always seek advice from with his broad knowledge of Newcastle cricket & what works & more importantly what what doesn't work.

The Knellers were the mainstays of the CB's in the 2000's - Bret & James both serving as CB president - parents Eric & Halina helping the CB's remain viable & successful. Bret has also served on the CB's general committee for many years.

After a major health setback Bret returned to the field with success & is still piling on runs in 3rd Grade where he also seeks to assist the talented young cricketers in our Club.
Currently sitting third in all time CB runs at over 7,300 as well as being a former seamer with more than 200 wickets Bret's ability speaks for itself in numbers - important in a game like cricket. I couldn't estimate how many matches he has played but it would be a big number.

Off field Bret is legend in CB folklore for the many nights cricket matches at his home "The Ranch" over the years where many unorthodox shots were required on the manicured pitch in his front lawn. He also specialises in trivia running many successful nights for the CB's & penning late late-night poetry over a glass of red or two.

I believe he would be a very worthy addition to the CB Life Member list.

Vale John Pearson

It is with extreme sadness, I report the passing of Life Member no. 26, John Pearson. John passed away in respite care on Monday evening 8 July. The dialysis treatment he had been receiving eventually got too much for his heart. He was 76.

John Pearson played just two seasons, 13 years apart, with Petersham-Marrickville, yet he was one of the most influential members of the club in the 1980s and through to its merger with Randwick in 2001. After beginning his cricket career with Balmain, he joined Petes in 1968-69 but was forced to transfer to the new Sydney club the following season when residential boundaries were changed. Some 12 years later, he was back in Petersham-Marrickville’s colours.

Increasing family and work commitments, however, saw him retire as a player at the end of the 1981-82 season. But he was not lost to the club and later served as Club Coach and Hon Treasurer. He was also a Delegate to the NSWCA and Sydney Cricket Association for 10 years before taking over as President of the club until December 1995.

During his time as President, he provided outstanding leadership when the club was under continual threat for amalgamation or exclusion from the 1st Grade competition. He and Hon Secretary Tim Dein formed a formidable duo in seeing off many such threats. His contribution to the Petersham-Marrickville club was formally recognised in 1996 when he was elected a Life Member. Four years later in the year 2000, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal by the Governor-General.

John Pearson was a very successful Sydney Grade cricketer scoring 5,080 1st Grade runs with four centuries and 23 fifties in a career spanning 13 seasons. All but 46 of those were with the Sydney club. With his lower grade performances, his overall tally exceeds 6,000 runs. He also took close to 100 wickets across all competitions.

John was a great supporter of the merger with Randwick to form Randwick Petersham Cricket. He maintained his involvement as a valued Director of the Randwick Petersham Cricket Foundation and a committee member of the club supporter’s group, known as the Randwick Petersham Cricket Legends Society. He and son Corey are also the joint sponsors of the “Clive Johnston Memorial Award”, an annual presentation to the club’s best under 21 Poidevin-Gray player.
Funeral details will be advised when known.

RIP John Pearson. One of the greats and a club legend in every respect.
