Congratulations to Paul Bradley - inducted into the Victorian Country Cricket League Hall of Fame today for services to Country Week and to Victorian Country Cricket at the Australian Country Cricket Championships.

Paul attended 12 ACC Championships, seven as a player and five as a Coach. He first represented Victoria at Townsville in 1991 and returned to the team in 1999. Five more appearances as a player from 2004 until 2008 before beginning his five year coaching stint from 2009 to 2013. Paul played 33 matches, scoring 710 runs @ 23.67. His highest score was 108. His tight spin-bowling was his forte in ACCC matches – 666 overs, 191 maidens, 75 wkts @ 22.39.

Best figures 6/34. Economy rate 2.52. Victoria Country won Championships in 1991, 2004 and 2007 while Paul was playing. Paul won the R M Hooper Trophy as Victoria’s best player five times – once on debut (1991) and four more between 2005 and 2008. No surprise, Paul was selected in the ACCC‘s 25 year anniversary team in 2008. He also played at St Kilda CC for several years and represented Mornington Peninsula CA at Melbourne Country Week for more than ten years, playing in eight premier teams and winning two Robert Bedford Medals.

Vale Bob Horsell

The Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club is very saddened of the news of Bob Horsell’s passing today.

His was a Life Member of the Club, President of the Club and served as Chairman of the NSW Cricket Association and was a director of The Australian Cricket Board.

Bob was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2012 for Services to Cricket Administration. He was also a Life Member of the NSW Cricket Association.

The Grandstand at Waverley Oval is jointly named after him.

Bob’s commitment and passion to his cricket club and his local community was unmatched. Waverley Oval was his second home. His fondness for his cricket club people was unwavering and engaging.

He was a club legend.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s children Kate and Michael at this sad time.

The cricket world mourns together.

Adam Dilley - Life Member of Port Adelaide Cricket Club

Port Adelaide Cricket Club are thrilled to announce that Adam Dilley has been awarded life membership at the clubs AGM.

A Darwin local, Dills made the move down to Port Adelaide in 2004-05 season and quickly established himself as a premiere batsmen in the competition.

Mark Carmichael – Life Member of Gordon District Cricket Club

[Mark Carmichael was awarded life membership at the Stags AGM in July. The article below comes from the speech given by Geoff Hickman recommending his nomination]

Mark grew up in the south-west of NSW in Crookwell and came to Sydney in the late 70’s to commence his university studies. He started playing for Petersham-Marrickville and remembers his first encounter with Gordon in a 4th grade game at Turramurra Oval.

He has great memories of his time with Pete’s and in fact when we play Randwick-Petersham now he refuses to call them anything but Petersham.

From there Mark moved interstate and played in both Perth and Melbourne representing University of WA and the Melbourne CC. He also played in England during this period. When he returned to Sydney in the mid 80’s he played for University of NSW where he played the rest of his grade career.

Mark became involved with Gordon in the mid 2000’s when his children Henry, Matilda and Alex started playing cricket for Gordon. He managed the Green Shield side when Henry played and also was involved with Matilda and Alex’s junior teams.

One of Mark’s great passions with cricket has been watching his children’s games and getting involved by helping when needed.

During his time involved with the club, which is nearly 20 years, he has acted as a selector, Chairman of Selectors and Chairman of the Cricket Committee, as well as in recent years sitting on the General Committee of the club.

What is so impressive about Mark’s contribution to the club, is that for most of his time at Gordon he has not had any direct involvement with the club, by either being a past playing member or having children playing, with Henry pursuing his rugby career with Gordon and Matilda her cricketing career in Western Australia.

If you look at the club’s current Life members the vast majority have played at the club, in fact there are only 3 living life members that have received the honour of life membership and not played for the club.

So, congratulations Mark, it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to our club and formally nominate you as a Life Member of Gordon District Cricket Club.

What kind of club uses PLAI?

Established in 1838, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) is among Australia's most prestigious and historic sports organisations. In 1859, it was responsible for creating the original rules for Australian Rules Football, marking a significant contribution to the sport.

The cricket club competes in the Victorian Premier cricket competition in Melbourne and has a long history of success within it. It boasts elite junior boys and girl’s teams, as well as several men’s and women’s teams in various grades. At the same time, the club hosts and runs its own competitive high-level competition, which includes participation from other clubs involved in the Premier league.

The MCC has been at the forefront of hosting significant sporting milestones. This includes the first English cricket team's tour in 1862, the first-ever Test match in 1877, and the inaugural one-day international cricket match in 1971. Beyond these historic achievements, the MCC fosters a dynamic and inclusive community, embracing participants from 12 different sports including baseball, bowls, croquet, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, netball, real tennis, target shooting, squash, and tennis. While the Club engages in a wide array of sports, its core focus continues to be on the effective management and forward-looking development of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, an iconic symbol of Australian sporting heritage.

Simon Porter awarded Life Membership at Waratah Mayfield District cricket club

Sunday 21st July 2024, we celebrated and honor Simon Porter, who has been awarded life membership at Waratah Mayfield DCCs AGM.

Simon's remarkable journey spans over three decades of dedicated service and excellence within our cricket community. His commitment to WMDCC is exemplified by his roles as first grade captain, Newcastle representative player, and curator for an impressive 25 years. Simon also works on Number 1 Sportsground and is regarded as one of the Hunter’s finest curators.

Notably, Simon was a key member of the esteemed Team of the 2000s decade, showcasing his exceptional talent and contribution to the sport.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Simon was honored with the prestigious Country Cricket Curator of the Year award this last season, underscoring his expertise and dedication to maintaining top-quality facilities for our club and the broader cricketing community.

Vale David Morrow, 1953–2024

David Morrow was a magnificent commentator with a distinguished career in sports media spanning over 50 years.

Many will remember David commentating on cricket on ABC radio. David cherished the Sydney Cricket Ground and took immense pride in his induction into the SCG Media Hall of Fame in 2023.

David, affectionately known as 'thirsty,” was the ABC Radio number one commentator for almost three decades. From 1985 to 1996, David also called Saturday’s rugby league games on ABC Television.

In July 2024, the National Rugby League announced David Morrow's induction into the National Rugby League Hall of Fame, a truly tremendous accolade.

David Morrow covered eight Olympic games and six Commonwealth Games and was one of the most versatile commentators in Australia’s sporting history.

After a battle with brain cancer, David Morrow sadly passed away on July 17, 2024.

RIP David Morrow.

Cricket clubs foster a sense of belonging and connection. The mateship and support structures we all experience are invaluable, as is our capacity to rally as a community when one of our own needs support.

Karl Hieser, Prahran Cricket Club Melbourne 2nd XI scorer, tragically lost his father (his carer) and his home in a house fire last Sunday night.

Karl, who suffers from cerebral palsy, is the volunteer every cricket club needs and loves with immense admiration.

He commenced scoring Prahran 2nd grade games back in 1992–93 and, for over 30 years, has scored more than 500 games of cricket.

Karl’s invaluable contribution and influence within the Prahran Cricket Club have seen him afforded Life Membership in the club as well as being inducted into the Prahran Cricket Club Hall of Fame.
