The 2021-22 Poidevin-Gray Shield competition had a reduced program due to the late start to the season as a result of the COVID pandemic. There were five preliminary rounds, each T20 matches played as part of T20 doubleheaders with 1st Grade, followed by the finals series which were 50-over matches. Sutherland won three and had two washed out in their five preliminary round matches.

Ron Mulock was born January 11th 1930 and died September 4th 2014. He was educated at St Declan's in Penshurst and De La Salle College (now Casimir Catholic College), Marrickville.

Ron was a fast medium outswing bowler who was raised in Hurstville and went on to play first grade for St George DCC (1st Grade player No.161). After moving to Penrith he went on to play for Central Cumberland which was the local club back in those days.

Waratahs most successful day in ADCA cricket, with five Premierships and and two Runners-Up, but when you are runners-up to your own club, does it really count as a loss? Seven Finals and two semis on the is day - 29th March - in Waratahs history.

Two up, two down in Waratahs Finals played on this day 28th March. Tim Bindley (pictured) won the Beau Richardson Trophy for his role in the 4th grade Final of 1982.

On Saturday 14th February 2022 in a NSW Premier Cricket 1st grade 50 over match against the Blacktown Mounties, Luke Dempsey took centre stage and lived up to his nickname of the ‘Big Ticket.’ Chasing Blacktown’s total of 9/189 his Parramatta team was ‘teetering on the brink’ at 3/54 when he took to the crease to join captain Nick Bertus in a rescue mission. The robust, bearded Dempsey then proceeded to ‘unleash the monster’ pulverising the defenceless Blacktown bowling attack

Pat Crawford was Petersham-Marrickville’s first Test cricketer. He was selected to play for Australia in the Second Test at Lord’s while on the 1956 Ashes Tour of England. Although Jack Moroney was the first from the club to actually play Test Cricket when he lined up against West Indies in Melbourne in December 1951, he was originally selected while a member of Marrickville.

A semi that could have been won as A grade squandered good match positions repeatedly on this day in 1960 v Uralla. Brian Roberts took 5-75 and Hugh Ferris (pictured) opened and top scored.

The Parramatta District Cricket Club (then known as Parramatta and Central Cumberland Electorate Cricket Club) was one of the eight foundation clubs of the NSWCA Electorate Competition (now NSW Premier Cricket) on the 7th of October 1893 – the other clubs were East Sydney, Glebe, Manly, Paddington, Sydney University, Redfern and Canterbury.

Over the passage of time from those early days of grade cricket through to the modern era of the 21st century ‘Family Connections’ have played a large part in the Parramatta Cricket Story.

On January 25th 2002, Dale Turner debuted for NSW against Victoria in the Pura Cup (previously playing for QLD). In the Victorian side, it also included Penrith First Grade Cap #102 Jason Arnberger.

As pictured above, Turner is pictured wearing his Baggy Blue with Penrith's all-time leading wicket taker and fellow spinner, Paul Thomas. Turner would record scores of 5 & 2, while returning figures of 0/66 & 0/25. Although in the 2001/02 First Grade season, he would score 331 runs at 41.38 and take 33 wickets at 15.03

The senior member of Randwick Petersham Cricket’s supporters’ group “The Legends”, Ken White brought up a century on Wednesday 19 March 2025. It wasn’t a “ton” of runs however, but a century of years. He turned 100 years of age, celebrating the occasion with his son Alan and family in Perth, Western Australia, where he moved in 2004.

Making the 100 milestone is not surprising, as Ken was one of those determined and never-say-die cricketers in his playing days with Petersham / Petersham-Marrickville, a club he joined 77 years ago.

Two remarkable Premiership victories on this day.
In 1972, A grade won comprehensively against Unicorns and put to bed the bogey which had seen them lose four out of the previous five Finals and a wait of 19 years since their previous Premiership. For once, the batting fired and then one of Waratahs strongest ever bowling attacks - Tom Cooke, Terry Mackenzie, Brian Joyce and John Donnelly - easily accounted for the University men.
In 1995, 4th grade rolled Norths reasonably cheaply after the same side had blitzed them in the semi. Joe Cairns took a career best 7-48. Waratahs were in trouble in reply until wicketkeeper Scott Murphy came out and thrashed the bowling, making the best century made in any Waratahs Final.

In the 1983-84 season, Sutherland’s 5th Grade team scored the most dominant victory in the Club’s history at Tonkin Oval on 19 & 26 October 1983. After being sent in to bat on day one by Uni of NSW B, Sutherland were in early trouble at 4/61 after 73 minutes. Number 3 batsman Greg Horner was joined by AW Green Shield player Ben Connell and they steadied things with a partnership of 96 in 83 minutes, before Ben was dismissed for 37. This brought wicketkeeper Anthony Quinn to the crease. What ensued was a 90-minute blitzkrieg as Greg and Anthony put the Uni attack to the sword!

Two bold Premiership victories in 1974 and 1984.
In 1974, A-Res grade won on the back of a MOM performance by the veteran John Russell, who bamboozled a Hillgrove with future stars Peter Schaefer and Gavin Morgan in their ranks. Russell had match figures of 10-69, including a match defining 6-33 in Hillgrove's first innings. In 1984 Waratahs beat Easts in an epic 1st grade Final, despite losing skipper and opening bowler Wes Davis on the eve of the game. After a strong opening stand, Tony Marquardt cut Waratahs down. In reply, Steve Reading, making only his second appearance in 1sts for the season, quickly removed the top three and then Joe Harrison spun a web around the rest for a remarkable win. Centrals outgunned 2nds in their Final.
The top three grades played Semis in 1990. 1sts bowled brilliantly but only just fell over the line against Hillgrove, but both lower grades surrendered against Easts. Jeremy Roach (6-41 - pictured) kept 2nds in the game until the batsmen threw it away and 3rds were demolished by Williams of Easts.

A cassette in our collection contains brief remarks from Don Bradman, in which he selected his best St George Cricket Club XI from all the cricketers he had seen playing for the club. He said: “Alan Fairfax and I became the club’s first international representatives in 1928. In the ensuing years many fine players gravitated through the St. George ranks; and I have taken the liberty of choosing a St George team which I would be happy to captain and challenge the best that could be chosen from any other club in Australia.

Here is my side in batting order: Arthur Morris, Les Favell, myself at first wicket, Norman O’Neill, Brian Booth, all-rounder Alan Fairfax, to keep wicket Ernie Laidler, to open the bowling Ray Lindwall and Harry Theak, and then the spinners Frank Ward and Bill O’Reilly, the greatest of them all. I am aware that Ernie Laidler and Harry Theak did not represent their country, but both were good enough to have done so. That is a beautifully balanced and attractive side.
