The news of a Military Cross was usually received with great pride by the Anzac Mounted Division, however on August 19, 1917, the despatch was received one hour after the news that Lieutenant Reg Black had died from wounds received the day before while on patrol near Um Urgan in Palestine. Reg was buried at the Rafa Military Cemetery and had been the first Gordon cricketer to enlist in the First World War in December 1914.

Stephen Kennaugh is the proud owner of Penrith first grade cap number 100 and the first player in Penrith history to score 5,000 runs and take 300 wickets.

In 1989/90 Stephen was joint winner along with Ray Hudswell and Greg Sheens of Penrith Club Player of the Year. In 1988/89 he was Penrith Poidevin Gray player of the year and in 1993/94 Stephen was awarded Penrith’s most outstanding all-rounder

Prasad Gandham is a skilful fast bowler for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club known for the high level of effort and dedication he puts in at training and in matches.

Last season, Prasad took 23 wickets at 16.35 with best figures of 5-73 off 17 overs against Penrith in Round 11.

He was also awarded the club's esteemed Dave Brooks award for Club Person of the Year by embodying and upholding Wests' ethos of 'Better People Through Cricket'.

M.A. Noble Lecture

To help foster the game in the local Manly Warringah District, the club's 1922/23 Committee arranged for Monty Noble, at the time one of the countries most decorated cricketers, to deliver one of his popular lectures on cricket at the Victoria Hall on 23rd March 1923. The Mayor MC'd the night, and over 200 lovers of the game attended, and were well repaid for their attendance as Noble’s talk and illustrations proved both instructive and interesting.

Cover shows a letter sent to the Manly Daily Editor by the Club's Secretary, Roy Bubb, outlining the evening.

Sutherland DCC 3rd Grade Premiers 1986-87

Sutherland won the 3rd Grade premiership in 1986-87 by winning all 16 matches played during the season (14 preliminary rounds, plus semi-final and final). The team was:

Adrian Mannel – 15 years as Treasurer - Appreciation Post

In 2010, the club was on the lookout for a new Treasurer, after Greg Hook decided to take a step back from duty full time. A young 22 year old player put up his hand to take on the challenge.

Now, heading into his 15th year, Adrian Mannel will become the longest serving Treasurer in Newcastle City Cricket Club’s history.

Greg had this to say about Adrian.

“It’s rare that someone so young has the social conscience to volunteer their services to a club for that length of time.

Adrian has done it with distinction and has been and continues to be an integral part of the success of the club”

Adrian’s loyalty and dedication to our Club was met with well justified Life Membership in 2019. A rich reward for many years of service.

When asked about his time at Newcastle City Cricket Club, Adrian said;

“It’s been great to play matches with so many talented juniors over the years who have gone through to play at a higher level, and seeing our Club progress to being such a strong force in the competition has been great to be part of.”

We also asked Adrian what 15 years of service meant to him.

“It’s an honour to get recognition for 15 years…” he said.

“Seem’s like I was just a kid when I started on the committee all those years ago”

”I’ve got so many memories, successes and friends from being involved…I look forward to continuing to do what I can to support and build the club even further…Thankfully the days of cheque books are now gone!”

Adrian went on to thank Greg Hook for his help over the years.

“Couldn’t have done it without Hooky, who has assisted me greatly.”

We congratulate Adrian on his 15 years of unwavering service and look forward to many more!

Belmont District Cricket Club 1st Grade Minor/Major Premiers and Club Champions 1993/1994

The 93/94 season was successful for Belmont winning the 1st grade premiership and the club championship. The First Grade final was played at No. 1 Sports Ground on Easter Friday, April 1st, and Easter Saturday, after rain washed out play on the scheduled playing dates of March 26th and 27th. Belmont just finished on top in one of the most closely contested and intriguing finals in years. during which fortunes fluctuated several times. Belmont's captain, Mark Curry, won the toss and chose to bat, which he may have regretted when Belmont lost 2 for 2 and then slumped to 6 for 45 after his own dismissal for 28. Belmont's hopes were revived by a seventh-wicket partnership of 52 between Greg Charlton 35 (3-4's) and Allan Sharp 28 (1-4) made in 79 minutes. Finally, the number 11 batsman Shane Dhu scored what proved to be an Invaluable 11 before the innings ended at 136. The off-spinner Jason Hill, who took 4 for 45 in 26 overs, and the leg-spinner Ben Woolmer, who captured 3 for 34 in 14 overs, were the most successful bowlers. At stumps on the first day, Charlestown appeared well in command at 2 for

77 only 59 behind. On the second day, Belmont's 17-year-old pace bowler Jamie Heath turned the match around almost single-handedly. Heath, who played in the Australian Under 17 championships and was selected in an Australian Under 17 development squad, took 4 for 17 in 8.1 overs on the second day for total figures of 5 for 38 in 15.1 overs. Charlestown collapsed 10 be all out for 127, Jeremy Barnes top scoring with 37 (4-4's) in 73 minutes. The other wicket-takers were the off-spinner David Wrixon, who took 3 for 41 from 18 overs including 5 maidens, and left-arm orthodox spinner Curry, who finished with 2/25 from 20 economical overs.

Belmont batted a second time, but the game was called off with 20 overs to go after Belmont reached 4 for 133. Curry remained 53 n.o. and Charlton completed a good double by scoring 41

The skipper Mark Curry scored 774 runs at @110.56 and also took 37 Wickets at @16.11 for the season.

Josh Bayliss is a young opening batter at Sydney Cricket Club who finished the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season in great style scoring his maiden century for the club in 3rd grade.

Off 68 balls Josh hit 5 sixes, 11 fours on his way to 104 not out to help Sydney defeat Mosman outright.

Dr. Barbour, playing for Stockton for a few seasons, has been able to form a shrewd idea as to the conditions and possibilities of cricket in Newcastle district. Here he makes an appeal to the Association at headquarters to assist a little more, for Newcastle has a splendid population, some fine grounds, and a great many players.

It is pleasing to be able to record that, after several lean post-war years, cricket in Newcastle is again coming into its own. Over 60 teams competed this year in the four competition grades controlled by the N.D.C.A., while another 18 club teams played under the aegis of the City and Suburban Association.

In 1970, Tom Spencer had played 6 years with MWDCC, debuting in 1964. He loved everything about the club in the mid to late 60’s, and wanted to make sure everyone new what the club was about.

So he made a decision, along with his wife Lynne, to put together a history of the club with a view to the clubs centenary celebrations in 1978.

In 1977/78, the Manly Warringah Waratahs celebrated our first 100 years as a club, culminating in a huge centenary dinner celebration. Below is an excerpt from that year's Annual Report describing the event, as well as the dinner menu from the evening.

"In its way the organisation of our Centenary Dinner was no less a dedicated venture than Tom and Lynne Spencer's written Club history - even though obviously not so prolonged an undertaking. It was the result of unstinting effort by committee members and its success was a tribute to their work.

Randwick Petersham has won an unprecedented 5 T20 Premierships since the inception of T20s into NSW Premier Cricket in 2008-09. The first premiership was won on Australia Day in 2012 v Sydney University at University No.1 with two other titles against the same opposition in 2015-16 & 2021-22.

In 85 matches the side has won 61, lost 21 (including 3 washed out draws). In 45 matches at home 31 have been won while 30 of 40 matches away have been won. It has also played in four Quarter Finals, eight Semi Finals, four Preliminary Finals and finished third three times.

Whilst it may seem a little pre-emptive to feature a 19 year old in our ‘Interview with a Champion’ series, it is not inaccurate. In the past season alone, young Rafael Macmillan captained NSW to victory at the Under 19 national championships, before being one of five New South Welshman to be selected for the Australian Under 19 tour of England.

Success in England was followed up by selection for the Under 19 World Cup which was eventually held in South Africa. In the World Cup final, Raf took a three wicket haul against India to end Australia’s 14 year drought at the tournament. To top it all off, Raf returned home to help end an 11 year drought, winning the Belvidere Cup with the dominant St George first grade squad.

Whilst we are sad to see Raf depart for Tasmania, we are incredibly excited to see what he can achieve in the Apple Isle on his rookie contract.

The 1994-95 Centenary Season - Western Suburbs District Cricket Club

Western Suburbs limped unconvincingly towards its centenary season in 1994-95. First Grade finished 18th in 1991-92, then 13th and 15th, and the Sydney Cricket Association's Committee of Management made no secret of the fact that it believed there was no future for Wests in the Grade competition. No-one outside of the club expected that Wests would have much to celebrate on its 100th anniversary.

Sutherland’s third grade team played their first home match of the 2003-04 season at Sutherland Oval against Western Suburbs on 4 October 2003. Western Suburbs won the toss and sent Sutherland in to bat. Their skipper must have known something, because the score at tea was 8/97 off 37 overs. First ball after the break, the score was 9/97 and number 11 Daniel Marandola was heading to the crease to join number 7 bat Aaron Phillips, who was 26 not out. In 69 previous matches for the club, Daniel’s highest score was 18.

In March 1954, Stockton District Cricket Club presented the Jim Dickinson Memorial Trophy to the Newcastle District Cricket Association in memory of Jim Dickinson, a member of the club who died in March 1953.

The trophy, "The Jimmy Dickinson Memorial Trophy", is awarded each year to the player with the highest average, with a provision that he gains 200 runs from no fewer than five innings and the trophy continues to be awarded by the NDCA to this day.

Gordon District Cricket Club

August 14, 1926, was the first day of the 5th Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Oval in London. While many of his friends suspected as much, Gordon’s Governor General Charlie Macartney announced this would be his final Test match. Charlie had turned 40 on June 27 which was the rest day in the Second Test of the same series in which Charlie scored 133 not out in a score of 5 for 194 to draw the match.

The series was a fitting end to his Test career with Charlie topping the batting list for the tour with 1,561 runs at 53.82 and 473 runs in the Test matches at a Bradman-like average of 94.60
