AW Green Shield success led to my selection in the NSW U/17 team. I was very honoured to play twice, even more in the second year when made captain. In the first year I was the young one, the ‘newbie’ on the block, given the job of short leg—under the lid and in the firing line!—and batting at Nos. 7 or 8, and bowling the odd over. It was an awesome experience, kitted up with Blues gear, boarding the plane to Brisbane, staying together as a team at a local University.

A first-class cricket all-rounder, who learnt his early cricket with Petersham-Marrickville, Damien Wright had the distinction of playing a major role in the winning of a Sheffield Shield competition. And while he was born and bred in NSW, his performance was not for his home State but for Tasmania. It was the 2006-07 season, with Tasmania playing NSW at Hobart. After top-scoring with 67 in the first innings, he demolished the NSW middle order in the second, taking a brilliant 5-13 to give Tasmania its first win in the competition.

Something extraordinary happened over the past two days.

This 12 years old cricketer has outdone herself yet again! After scoring an unbeaten 153* against U15 boys, Kaya has now raised the bar with an incredible 164* in the senior ladies' competition, smashing 16 fours and 4 sixes. This marks her fourth century of the season and her third 150+ score.

But that’s not all. Yesterday, in the Brewers Shield (U18 Premier/Senior cricket), Kaya delivered another decent performance, scoring 75* (not out) with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Remarkably, she may be the youngest player to achieve this milestone, scoring 50+ runs and clearing the ropes twice in a Premier/Senior cricket match.

Do these records matter? Maybe, maybe not.

One thing’s for sure... we don’t just like cricket, we absolutely love it! 💪🏏❤️

When Steve Smith held a sharp chance to his left at second slip off Mitchell Starc late in the day yesterday, it was his 197th catch in Tests, going past Ricky Ponting’s previous record of 196 for the most catches by an Australian fieldsman in Test cricket. What is remarkable about this achievement is that Steve set the new record in his 116th Test, whereas Ponting played 168 Tests (taking his 196th catch in his 167th Test).

Gordon 1974-75 Poidevin-Gray Premiership

The 1974-75 season was very successful for Gordon. They won the Club Championship by a huge margin and all Grade teams reached the semi-finals (only the top four went through to the playoffs in those days). Unfortunately, only one of those sides won their premiership but it was, nevertheless, a wonderful year.

The Poidevin-Gray side also had a great season.

When you look at the highest runs scorers for Gordon you naturally expect to see famous names like Charlie Macartney, Sid Carroll and Jack Potter and not the man who played his last game for the club in 2022. The one and only Damon Livermore.

Damon retired at the end of the 2016/17 season with a total of 10,049 runs at an average of 30.27. His total runs include 2550 runs in First Grade and the rest mainly in seconds and thirds.

Belmont District Cricket Club President's Report and 1st Grade Report 1990/91

It is with much pleasure I write this report. The results of the first grade being, with the exception of the TOM LOCKER CUP, the best that could have been. Our achievements were a complete team effort with everyone contributing to the cause. The willingness & availability of players for all games throughout the season is a tribute to the keeness of this clubs players. It is with this in mind I note the reduction of the CUP competition for next season to accommodate some of our less industrious members of the N.D.C.A.

Daniel Dent, more commonly known as 'Tinman' has played over 30 seasons for Penrith. Throughout this time Danny has scored over 7,000 runs and taken over 500 wickets. Riding the highs and lows of grade cricket, Tinman is still playing and giving back to the club with his experience and wisdom to help younger players evolve.

This week-end sees St George take on Parramatta in Round 14 of the Belvidere Cup.

After the passing of St George legend Brian Booth in 2023 it was decided that these two great clubs would contest their yearly battle in the Belvidere Cup for a trophy named in honour of two of the clubs greats, Brian Booth (St George) and Doug Walters (Parramatta).

On September 24, 1978, Pratten Park, the home of Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, became the stage for a truly special event—the Australian Quadriplegic Charity Cricket Match.

Two star-studded teams took the field: the Bob Simpson XI and the Les Johns XI, featuring a unique mix of Australian Test cricketers and top NSWRL rugby league players.

I played all grades at Belmont, my first game in first grade was at Cahill oval, I was 17 years old, Kerry Thompson was the captain, Gary Gilmour was in the side, 2nd week was washed out, I bowled a couple of overs, not really needed.

Roberto Howard will umpire his 100th men’s premier cricket first grade match this weekend in the Fairfield-Liverpool v Penrith fixture at Rosedale Oval.

Roberto commenced umpiring more than a decade ago when he first officiated in the then Sydney Grade Cricket competition. He made his first grade debut at Chatswood Oval in November 2016 umpiring the match between Gordon and Sydney University. He was elevated to the NSW State Umpire Panel in July 2018. He has become a highly respected umpire in our first grade competition.

With courtesy to Bob Watson – son of Billy Watson who played Test Cricket for Australia and was the St George District cricket Club opening batting partner for many years with Warren Saunders.

This raw film (we’re not sure if it’s been published before) was taken on a Jack Chegwyn Cricket Tour to Quirindi in Northern NSW in 1962. The film contains several of NSW cricketers and their wives.

Warren Saunders affectionally known as Mr St George passed away on 1 March 2023 and can be seen in the film batting and then walking to the camera.

The NSW Under 15 cricket team toured Northern Territory in 1987 to play 3 games in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

Back Row – Jeff Evans (team manager in blue shirt), Mark Pacey, Justin Gale, Matthew Rudd, Henry Vera. The rest of the players in the back row were from Northern Territory.

Middle Row – Gavan Twining (Captain), Brett Kirk, Oliver Hodges, Brett Kirby, Brad McKay – then the Northern Territory team

Front Row – Bruce Graham, Matthew Cleary – then the Northern Territory team.

I remember Gary Jones being in the team however he doesn’t seem to be in the photo.

What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket?

There has been a few with the SCG XI – every time we played on the SCG, playing in the grounds of Windsor Castle and sitting on the balcony of the Lords dressing room chatting with Stuart McGill and having dinner in the Long Room. Watching my mate Shaun Leary score a century at the Broadhalfpenny Down cricket ground where they invented cricket. Going on tours of India and Hong Kong. Playing with some great people. Seriously, can’t choose one.

A memorable moment in cricket.

It was on the tour of the West Indies in 1973 by a team known as “The Cliffhangers”—named after the leader Joe Cliffe who had befriended many top West Indians when on earlier Old Collegian tours. Champion NSW spinner David Hourn and the Queensland and Tasmanian wicket-keeper batsman, John Bell, also made the tour. The tour coincided with the Australian Test team tour and we played many of the island sides after the Aussies had passed through.

One game we played was a two day match in Antigua on a ground next to the local jail. The relevance of that reference was that the scoreboard attendant was a prisoner anchored by a large ball and chain while an armed guard sat by his side.

The captain of the Antiguan team was a 21 year old who we hadn’t heard of, although we were told he could play a bit. His name was Vivian Richards. We were also advised that another young player would join the side although he was injured and would bowl off a short run. His name was Andy Roberts.

Needless to say, Roberts cleaned us up pretty quickly and we were in the field by mid-afternoon.

Late in the day, Richards strode to the wicket. Soon after, I was re-introduced to the attack despite having not taken a wicket with the new ball. But bowling what were the last two balls of the day, Richards launched into both and they disappeared by some distance over the square-leg boundary fence. I was told that the second one ended up in the local shopping market.

And while that moment had little significance at the time, just a few years down the track it became one of monumental proportion when Viv Richards became an International super-star. For being twice belted out of the park by the great man, I was able to take some (tongue-in-cheek) credit for launching his illustrious career!

Nic Maddinson was the best of the bowlers with 5-95 to become the youngest player in Sydney first grade history to score a century and take five wickets in an innings in the same match, aged 18 years 96 days. The previous record-holder was Shane Lee, who was 19 years 46 days.

In the 1982/83 season, Penrith's First Grade were able to bring home the First Grade Premiership back to the club for the second time in the club's history. Penrith would take on Bankstown in the Final at Hurstville Oval, winning the toss and batting first.
