We now explore the decade mainly covering the 50's in Part 7 of our 10 part series featuring 100 significant moments in 100 years of St George DCC First Grade cricket.

1. Arthur Morris becomes the second St George DCC player to score a double century in first grade. He scores an unbeaten 201 against North Sydney. (1951-52)

The 2024/25 season was another dominant one for the BWCUCC Premier Men. The first block of red ball cricket saw two large wins over Saint Albans & Sydenham and weather effected draws against Riccarton & Heathcote.

New Zealand u19’s captain, Oscar Jackson’s 143* against Riccarton the most notable performance from this block. This strong start opened up a lead at the top of the 2-Day Championship heading into the white ball section of the summer.

The Whisper Behind a Roar: David Trist

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club and the entire cricket community lost one life’s great characters in David Trist in late May; a terrific ambassador for the sport and the man with his fingerprints all over New Zealand's maiden ICC Trophy.

Who is the best wicket keeper you’ve had the good fortune to play with?

I played a lot with Tim Cummins in my early years; he’d have to be up there. I also played a few games of cricket with a baby-faced Tyran Liddiard as well who has gone on to become one of the best going around currently, but he was still a young’un learning his craft when I played with him. It’s a tough one, but I’ll give this one to Tim, who is also still playing well for Sydney University. I do sometimes miss hearing him tell the outfielders to get their throws up

Bob Thomas - From Wade Park, Orange to Chatswood Oval: An Unexpected Call Up

Having played two seasons for Sutherland, employment led me to the North Shore, Gordon Cricket Club and Chatswood Oval. The team was captained by the venerable Dick Guy, who demanded his high expectations be met each and every game. Behind the stumps was the Australian wicketkeeper, Brian Taber, a champion player and an even better bloke. I used to field in the covers, and survey the field, almost pinching myself how wonderful it was to be part of such a competitive team.

At the 127th North Sydney District Cricket Club Annual General Meeting in 2020, Tony Johnson was unanimously voted to be the club’s 45th Life Member.

Tony’s association with the Bears began when his son, David (first grade cap 573), joined the Green Shield side. Tony took up the scorebook for the club, and was a constant in the scorer’s box until he stepped down after the 2012/13 season.

It was a long time coming but in May 1973 the Nepean District Cricket Association received an invitation to join the NSW Cricket Association Sydney Grade Competition. The wheels has been in motion since 1966. True, it was a frustratingly long process but because Nepean was a member of the Hawkesbury Cricket Council, which was a Country Council affiliated to the NSWCA through Country Cricket, and Nepean's application had to be submitted through the HCC, there was much discussion, many letters and follow-up meetings.

The, in 1972 the NSWCA sub-committee was commissioned by the Executive Committee to review, a) the system of residential qualifications, b) boundaries of the Sydney Grade Clubs, c) inclusions of the peripheral Country Councils - Hawkesbury, Illawarra, Hunter Valley and the Newcastle DCA - in the Sydney grade competitions.

Nick Watkins' First Grade double ton

In the previous round at NSO vs Easts, Nick Watkins had made 166* in a draw with the Bears needing 11 runs before bad light halted play.

In Round 6 vs Campbelltown-Camden, Watkins then peeled off 202 off 293 balls with 27 fours and 2 sixes

Gordon’s long term bowling stalwart Adair Durie finally succumbed to a persistent knee injury and retired at the end of the 2013/14 season.

The Gordon club received the news in an emotive email from Adair that thanked all those involved in his career and promised to stay in touch and hopefully remain involved in the club in the future.

Many players when they retire can look back on their career and pick out a performance or two that really stand out. I doubt there are many, however, who can say they bowled 35 overs unchanged (except for the tea break) and took 8 for 56 in a premiership final.

Word has filtered through that Cricket NSW Baggy Blue Player No 639, David Freedman, has wrapped up his time with Cricket NSW.

Known to most simply as Freddy, Fred, or the Gangster, David’s been part of the Cricket NSW fabric since 1991 — as a player, coach, selector, and development manager. It’s been a mighty innings.

One of his former teammates put it thoughtfully:

William Affleck – The Steadfast Opener

Will Affleck spent his junior cricketing days playing within the Parramatta District under the watchful eyes of his dad John, a former 1st grade batsman with PDCC. But his entry into NSW Premier Cricket took a different path and Will spent several seasons undertaking a somewhat nomadic journey developing his game at a variety of clubs – North Sydney, Mosman, Western Suburbs, and Randwick-Petersham – before joining Parramatta as a mature player in 2014/15.

When Canada Defeated Australia - Chappell, Lillee, Marsh and Co in 1975.

The Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club were very happy and fortunate to host the Australian National Cricket team for three games on their beautiful grounds in May 1975. The weather was ideal, the anticipation was high and, in the end, the event was the greatest episode in Canadian cricket in the decade of the seventies.

We all know the results of the first match when Australia met the Eastern Canada representative team. It made news worldwide.

Rupert Coogan, in all probability, was the best left-hand orthodox spinner to represent the Parramatta Club. He was a remarkably consistent wicket-taker during his term with the club. The second member of the ‘elite brigade’ who had captured over 300 wickets in 1st grade whilst adorned in the club’s traditional two-blue colours (Leslie Pye was the first).

His career span with Parramatta, then known as Central Cumberland, ranged from 1909/10 to 1924/25.

In the modern world of professional cricket, it is highly unlikely that the Australian Test captain would take a team from his Premier Cricket Club on a weekend trip of social cricket.

Bob McMillan played second and third grade, as an opening bowler, for Parramatta (Cumberland) and first grade Rugby Union for Parramatta, but later in life he moved to the country and became a ‘Bush Poet’ – a great fan of Henry Lawson.

Here's part 6 of this amazing 10 part series and wasn't this a wonderful era for the club.

1. Brian Booth is selected in the Australian squad for the 1961 tour of England. He makes his debut in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, dubbed ‘Benaud’s Manchester miracle’ after England lose 9 for 51 in the fourth innings. Booth scores 46 and 9 as Australia win by 54 runs. (1961-62)

Nick Bertus ‘A knack for Winning - Parramatta District Cricket Club

Apart from his personal talent as a cricketer, it’s his ‘knack for winning’ that distinguishes Nick Bertus from all other prominent captains of the Parramatta District Cricket Club teams.

His winning association with Parramatta commenced in 2007/08 when he was a member of the premiership winning A.W. Green Shield team (captained by Sean Abbott). Nick’s own captaincy success started when he guided Parramatta’s Poidevin-Gray Shield team to the 2012/13 title.
