We continue our St George First Grade Player Series with one of the greatest glovemen.

St George 1st Grade Player No.213 - Ray Tozer

A high quality wicket keeper and handy right handed batsman, Ray debuted for the club in 1961-62 and made his First Grade debut in the season of 1964-65. He would become an integral part of one of the most successful grade teams in the history of the competition.

The 1988-89 season was a special one for the Manly Warringah Waratahs. We won the 1st Grade Premiership under the Captaincy of Greg Bush, as well as winning the prestigious Club Championship.

Our 1st Grade win was the first since the 1973/74 season when Mick Pawley led the team to victory, while the Club Championship was only our 2nd win ever, and was the first since the 1976/77 season.

Ryan Bonnor will go down as one of the most talented all-round cricketers ever to play for Manly.

A leg-spinning all-rounder, the man affectionately known as "Doochy" could do it all.

When he was on with the ball, it was amazing to see. He had a click of his fingers that was a pleasure to listen to, and showed that the ball was spinning big. You could almost pick his variations just from listening to how loud his "click" was.

Looking through my old memorabilia today I came across a prized trophy from 1974. By the end of that day I had thoughts I could be joining Lillee and Thommo scattering pom's stumps at the SCG in the next few months. I was a dreamer though.

It all came about when I was attending Matraville High, the home of Russell Fairfax, the Ella brothers, Llyod Walker, Eddie Jones, David Knox and on a non-sporting note, Bob Carr.

To say this place was a sporting icon is selling it short, it was sport, sport and more sport and a few people actually thought we were there to learn academically. They were kidding themselves.

The greatest moment in Australia-India cricket relations.

Thankfully fate played a helping hand and Australia won so easily the next day that we finished our work early, and when we arrived back at our hotel there were the original six boys, with bats and balls in hands, loitering nearby.

So back we went to the dusty field for more handshakes, scribbles of our names, and long run-offs that pushed in through the gloom while tuk-tuks, cars, trucks, and tractors farted the background score to spasmodic bursts of ‘Good shot, sah’; ‘Oh very well bowled sah;’ and ‘You are very fine player, sah.’

At the end of the 1987-88 season, Steve Rixon announced his retirement from first class cricket, meaning that he would be available for a full season of first grade in 1988-89. At the end of the season, John Dyson wrote in his captain’s report for the annual report:

Our other allrounder, Steve Rixon, had a great final year. He remained the premier gloveman in NSW and thankfully his tenacity with the bat returned, so that we were treated to some vintage Rixon strokeplay, including the world-renowned “woop” through mid-wicket from outside off stump. On top of this, he captained the team during my State duty absence and performed the Club Coach’s role with distinction. I know that I’ll miss playing cricket with Steve in the future

Jack Jobson joined Western Suburbs District Cricket Club at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.

So far this season, Jack has made a strong impression on everyone at the club with his maturity, patience and high level of skill with the gloves and bat.

At just 15 years of age, Jack has already made his second-grade debut for Western Suburbs, taking 4 catches with the gloves against Bankstown in round 7.

Congratulations Steve Smith. We remember that 91 in your first game! November 2005.

Steve Smith was appointed as captain of the Australian Test team for the match against India starting on December 15, 2015. At the time the Gordon District Cricket Club congratulated him on his achievement.

The announcement was made within a story in the Sydney Morning Herald on December 15 under the title: “Steve Smith goes from teenage club sensation to Australian cricket captain”

A win for the ages in first grade as Axel Cahlin and Ash Doolan pull off the impossible – November 20, 2017

On the first day of the clash between Gordon and Manly on November 13, 2017, the two clubs commemorated their 14 players who lost their lives in World War 1. The two clubs, while opponents on the field, were united in their respect for their past players who gave the ultimate sacrifice. That closeness of the two teams continued on with the cricket that was played and ended in one of the most exciting finishes ever seen at Chatswood.

Graeme Watson (‘Beatle’) came to Sydney in 1976 with the reputation of being a very hard-hitting batsman and a bowler who, on his day, could be pretty sharp. He took a while to make his mark in Grade cricket – being in the Shield team meant he was coming and going all the time. The first game where he really showed his talents was against Sydney. Gordon had lost comfortably on the first innings, having got the worst of a damp wicket. A challenging second innings total was set for them, and, going on their first innings performance, an outright win looked highly unlikely. The target was 180 in about 105 minutes.

Saturday 16 November 2024 will go down as one of the most historic days in the 24 years of Randwick Petersham Cricket–and maybe in the 131 years of Sydney Grade/NSW Premier Cricket. It was a day when not one, but two bowlers took 10 wickets in a grade match. And both were just 18 years of age—one on debut in 2nd Grade and the other in 5th Grade in his debut season.

Etched into the history books will be the names of Kaden Warner and Atharv Ramakanth

Sutherland defeated Sydney University in the final under lights at the SCG to win the T20 premiership. This is the report that was posted on the club website the following day:

Our boys played great cricket to carry off the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup at the SCG last night – the only competition that we had not previously won. Disciplined bowling and fielding ensured that we strangled the opposition batting in both matches, thus enabling comfortable run chases both times.

On 28th February 1903 at Parramatta Oval in a First Grade match against Glebe, Cumberland Wicket-keeper George Jordan stumped five batsmen, including four of the first five wickets to fall.

Since the commencement of the A.W. Green Shield competition in 1937/38, only five players have achieved the trifecta of Captaining the Club in Green Shield, Poidevin –Gray Shield and First Grade. These Players are:

Brian Booth made the first of his twenty nine appearances for Australia at Old Trafford, Manchester, in the 4th Test of the 1961 Ashes tour. While that game in itself, particularly the effort of Richie Benaud, is worth reporting, the article below, written by Phil Tresidder, throws new light on the activities of our esteemed former Patron. Apparently, Brian was not only adept at snaffling catches, he also could turn his hand to bails. These bails are now, appropriately, on display in the Booth Saunders Pavilion, as the attached photo highlights.

824 runs….18 wickets….197 overs….no points - Randwick Petersham v St George 2010-11

It was round 12 of the 2010-11 season and the Saturday/Sunday weekend clash was between Randwick Petersham and St George at Coogee Oval. The Randy Petes were 1st Grade competition leaders while Saints were in front in the Club Championship. A win to the locals would maintain their competition lead and put them ahead of the Hurstville boys in the Club Championship. It was going to be a close match.

Belmont District Cricket Club- Presidents and First Grade Captains Report 1986/87

As Club Coach it has been another successful season. The Club once again produced a very good allround season with all sides performing to the Club's satisfaction. To the First XI, we almost availed ourselves another premiership, playing average cricket. If we all play to our ability in 1987/88 maybe Major and Minor Premierships could be our reward.
