North Sydney Third Grade travelled to Merrylands Oval for a regulation two-day match in Round 8 of the 2009/10 Sydney Grade Cricket season. The Bears were mid-table with three wins, three losses and a draw. But they were in good form having won their last two, including an outright the prior round vs Penrith.

The selected Bears team was choc full of doyens, featuring a future President, Vice President, Treasurer and Committee member. The selected side was to also include current Bears First Grade spearhead James Campbell, who was to come into the side as skipper Jason Keane was unavailable with a niggle

Matt Hilder came from the Petersham-Marrickville side of the merger with Randwick in 2001 to form Randwick Petersham. He was an experienced 22-year-old Sydney Grade cricketer, having started as an A W Green Shield boy with Parramatta DCC in 1993-94. He joined Petes in 1998-99, playing lower grades and Poidevin Gray Shield until the creation of Randwick Petersham. He finished second in the 2nd Grade batting aggregate with 300 runs in 2000-01, playing with the likes of David Bourke and Dean White, a season after putting on 141 in a partnership with Steve Yates for the first wicket against Manly in a PGs match. He was a valued player with Petersham-Marrickville and remained as such with Randwick Petersham.

When a Canadian Club Cricket Team Played Australia Led by Greg Chappell and Dennis Lillee in 1975

This was going to be a game against The Australian National Team comprised of some of the most accomplished cricketers ever to play Down Under who were visiting our ground at Armour Heights. It was their third game in three days in Toronto. Many of these Aussies had lost on the same ground two days before: Greg Chappell, Lillee, Higgs, Marsh, Walker, Laird, Turner and McCosker.

It was their last game before heading off for the headline series, the Inaugural World Cup which would take place in England in a few days.

Australia was going to bat first. I had the honour of being one of the opening bowlers along with Basil Peters. And it wasn’t just an honour. I knew if the captain was giving me the new ball that I had a job to do.

Dave Evans was a true Gordon Legend - Part 2

Dave recommenced his cricket career immediately after the war, playing in the top three grades for seven seasons from 1945 to 1952. Included were some matches in the First Grade premiership team of 1945-46 and a whole season in the 1947-48 Third Grade premiership team. In the 1950s, when work commitments meant Dave had to travel a lot, often overseas, he played when available in the Colts team until 1962. Dave scored 1,982 runs for Gordon at an average of 19.62 including two centuries, both in Third Grade with one at Beauchamp.

Vale Kevin Parmenter - First Grade Player No.230

We regret to announce the passing of St George DCC first grade player number 230 – Kevin Parmenter.

Kevin played his Junior cricket with Hurstville Sports and commenced his grade career with St George starting in 4th Grade in the season of 1967-68. After some success including his first grade century (102 no) Kevin earned a promotion into 3rd Grade.

Matt Cassar was the fourth Petersham-Marrickville cricketer to play English County Cricket. He played six years with Derbyshire and two with Northamptonshire between 1994 and 2002. He followed in the footsteps of Bill Alley, Ken Grieves and Noel Hughes, all of whom participated in the County Championship for several seasons. Another to have a career in English cricket was Cec Pepper, who left the club in 1946 and played in the Lancashire League for almost 20 years.

Matthew Edward Cassar was born at Sydney on 16 October 1972. He joined Petersham-Marrickville’s under 16 years A W Green Shield team of 1987-88 alongside future club 1st graders Corey Pearson, Matt Whitby and David Kelly

Phil Emery: A Bowler's Tribute to his Keeper

I had the privilege of bowling to some outstanding wicketkeepers over the years – Greg Dyer, Mark Atkinson, David Moore, Paul Ryan, and Adam Gilchrist immediately spring to mind.

Not a bad group by any measure.

But no one matched my longtime teammate, Phil Emery. The reason is simple. Embers knew my game inside out and made me a better player than I would’ve been otherwise.

Dave Evans was a true Gordon legend - Part 1

David John Evans was born at Merewether, a suburb of Newcastle, on 13 December 1919. His family moved to Cobar Street, Willoughby, close to that suburb’s boundary with Artarmon, when he was seven. He had two brothers, Trevor and Basil, and went to Artarmon Primary School.

His father, also David, was a keen cricketer who had played First Grade with the Randwick club. This keenness rubbed off on Dave at an early age and he soon found that there was a backyard in Cooney Road, Artarmon, not far away, which was like a miniature Sydney Cricket Ground

Gordon Rorke - RIP

Gordon Rorke was one of the most significant people ever to have played the game of cricket: he was responsible for a change in a basic rule that had existed since the game began.

For over a hundred years, for a delivery to be legal, a bowler’s back foot had to be placed behind a line level with the stumps. Gordon’s unique bowling action of leaning back in his delivery stride and via his momentum, dragging forward on the toe of his back foot, meant that at the time of delivery his back foot might well be in front of the batting crease

The 2024/25 season was the eighth in which the Access Grants Bradman Medal was awarded to our First Grade player of the year, thanks to the continued generous support of our longstanding sponsor. Points are awarded in each round based on runs, wickets and fielding dismissals, and totted up to determine the overall positions. The winner at the end of the season takes home $1,000, and there’s $100 on offer for each round.

This year, captain Mac Jenkins went back-to-back after winning the Medal in 2023/24, thanks to his run of bowling form in the early season.

There is a pattern that repeats itself throughout the history of the Western Suburbs club, in which, first, the club builds itself up into a position of enviable strength - and then it unravels. The unravelling has seldom been as sudden or dramatic as it was in the seasons after 1987. Of the eleven players who performed so well in the frustrating semi-final of March 1987, only one was still in the Wests First Grade side at the start of 1990-91.

There were any number of reasons for the exodus of players, and some were unavoidable. Dirk Wellham, David Gilbert and Scott Hookey all elected to accept offers to play for Tasmania, Chris Killen agreed to appear for South Australia

Marcus William ‘Marc’ Bosley – A Natural Leader - Parramatta District Cricket Club

Apart from his own bowling prowess, Marc Bosley earned lasting repute within the Parramatta club as one of its most distinguished 1st Grade captains. During the 1930s he captained the team for six years, with the ‘jewel in the crown’ being the winning of the elusive 1st Grade Premiership - the club’s second title in 1932/33 – his leadership was at its pinnacle as he guided a very young and inexperienced Cumberland team to a totally unexpected premiership

Matt Farrant is a club legend at Burnside West Christchurch University CC. The fast bowler played 201 games for the club before assisting Head Coach Carl Huyser through the club's most successful period. 'Faz' played with numerous national representatives while leading Burnside's attack, but he will be dominantly remembered for his formidable new ball partnership that stretched over a decade with Scott Inglis.

Only eight days after Wests had claimed the 1914-15 title, Australian forces landed at Gallipoli, bringing home the seriousness of the war. As casualty lists mounted, competitive cricket seemed more and more like an inappropriately frivolous pastime, and cricketers risked facing allegations of "shirking". Increasing numbers of Wests cricketers signed up, and their names began to appear on the casualty lists: John Blacklock, a keen member of the club's City & Suburban team, fell in the vicious fighting at Lone Pine, aged only 21.

Hastings is another surname that carries a great legacy around the cricket club. Mark Hastings, son of Brian was a triple threat cricketer, excellent with bat, ball and in the field.
